Of the amount of business done heie.hardiy an adequate conception can be formed. I here are made every week. 1.SO0 000 yards or cloth, amounting to 9.1,600 000 yards yard per ear enough to extend twice aiouud the entire world! Sixty-five thousand bales ofcolon are worked up annually. Of printed eaiico. there are here made 14,000 000 y anls per year. The annual consomction at Lowell is really astonishing. It is very nearly as follows. Coal, tons 15 000 Wood, cords 4.000 Oil.gallons 80.000 Charcoal, bu.hels 6000.000 Starch, pounds 1.000 lltM One would he apt to suppose, from the above statement of the annual products of Lowel that they were neaily sufficient to supply the demand of the entire country. But let ui consider this a moment and we shall find some rather odd devel opments. The number i f yards of cloth annuallv made here is 83 600,000. There being 20,000.000 "f people in the United Slates each could have 41 yards of Lowell manufacture. Bui the ladies alone consume the wholi amount, leaving the sterner portion vl lhe American people to look to oilier plates for their clothing, or a lopt the ancient custom of "wandering about in sheepskins and goatskins." I don't uih to be obtrusive, but I'm in tlse statistical iiue now, and hope the ladies will pardon me if I go so far as to enquire briefly into the extent of their annual demand, 'individually and collectively." I beiieve the '-spring and summer fashions for lSlT'Muly authenticated, require for a ladjVdress, only fourteen yards. I woiild'i-.t for the woild, specify each article of female diess, and measure out on paper the number of yards in each, but I put it to the candcr of any one to say whelher twenty-six yards are mote than enough to make up the balance of a lad v's full attire? A Ming the fourteen to the menty-six, and we have oh Lord! is it true that each fair one we meet, carries wilh her forty yards of dry gocdsl Now these figures heing so lsrye, I dare not allow the ladies but to full suits a tear, and this would give to each 80 yardsi I presume it is fair to conclude that the adult females oflhe land number all of 7,000,000; then their annual consumption amounts to the enormous pile of 560 000,000 ) srd! Lowell may be multiplied indefinitely Indeed they must be.or the lords of creation w ill ere long be embarrassed with a stat of mudity hopelessly irretrievable! The Factory bindings in Lowell are nearly all situ tied on the Merrimack, though there are a few scattered over the town. They are very extensive many fthem six or seven stories hich.and two hundred feel in length; a nd their appearaoce ti exceedingly imposing. "A dozen children may seem a large family, with olJ folks, who are moderate," remarked Mrs. Partington; "but my poor, dear husband used to tell a story of a tvomrti in some part of the worlJ, wheie he stopped one night, who had nineteen children in live years; or five children in nineteen years, I don't remember which; bat I teaiem'o -r it was one or t'other. ArothsrHit The Hamilton (Ohio) Inttlligencer, refers to the Taylor move, men'-, in the follow ing language."It has been a favorite plan with those who are trying to force Gen. Taylor upn the Whigs to avoid a convention; and by such a move they would most readily onspap, their miserable scheme. Those therefore who would preserve the Whig party, must stand ut for a convention as the means of securing to the mass of the W higs a fair hearing on tha subject.--W itb a convention, the voice of the mass of the whigs can be heard, and the Taylor project detested without one, the Tayloritcs will r'orce their man upon tha party. n-J ensure its die-Siluiinn Tit lime k cor9 when there is no alternative betwsao tbscom:nt:onofanoutaadaat.-wsr man,

The lollowing sad tale, so much to the discredit of our species, (we are sorry to say it.) was related to us on Monday last by the victim himself, the injured husband in person. On Monday night, the 2d of this month, in Dubois county, near Haysville. the wife of James Bkattt arose from her bed a. bout midnight, leaving her husband alone, and departed for parts unknown, or has been cruelly abducted, and has not since been heard from. She took with her a pair of saddlebags, a silver watch, some five or six of her brtt dresses and $ 13 in cash! The saddlebags were much worn, and the time. piece had a part of the dial broken in, and was cracked clean across the face two different wsys. Mrs. Bkattv is a tall square. built woman, dark complected, with dark heivy eyebrows and black hair and is remarkablyrfe and easy in her conversation. She is the daughter of Tro. Her maiden name was (Mary, Moore;) she married on the 4th of June, 1846, ami has left a devoted husband to weather the storm alone, without any children. No gentleman from the neighborhood ia missing, though the neighbors apprehended that she has been decoyed away by the seductive smiles of a guilty paramour!-. She had lived happily with her husband up toihat moment of time, and, therefore, her present conduct cannot be accounted for on common sense principles. This is more especially the case in Fsna Aocb, a disease which in its different ramifications, has not only set the nsual preperations for its cure at defiance, but has baffled the skill of many or our first physicians. This is tbe list surprising when it is considered that the patient is nsuallv exposed to the same deleterious influencts in which the disease originated. The proprietors of this invaluable remedy are well aware of the vast number of medicines before the public, which by large doses of quinine and bv mineral poisons, have the effect or breaking Chills 'and fever for the time, but the just and universal objection to them is their powerful effect upon the organs aotrd upon, invariably reuses such a reaction, as leaves the system debilitated, and consequently more liable to disease than bt Tore, and les capable of withstanding the effects of the poisennns miasma, which is so prevalent in the West and So-ith. I keohject ofthe original com pounder of the above pills, has been the preparation of a medicine that should not only thorn'ly eraadicate the disease, but by its peculiar fc speeifiic action upon the Stomach, Liver, Howeta and billiarv organs, invigorate and strengthen the whole system, and thus enable it better to withstand Ihe malarious influences to which it may be exposed for the future. In this, aided by an intimate knowledge of thia disease, acquired during a long practice, he has most happily succeeded. Since its discovery it ha been used largely in private practice, and without a single falure, and such efforts are now making as induce the proprietors to hope being able to supply the demand for the w hole countey, to which it ia confidently receom mended at a pttitive cure Tor the Fever and Ague.
