That vision of the past, My head is ever crazing; Yet when I saw her last I could not speak for gazing. Oh, lingering rose of May: Dear as when first I met her: Worn in my heart alwny. Life-cherished, Margaretta! We parted near 'he stile As morn was faintly breaking, For many a weary mile Oh how my heart was aching: P.nt distance, time, and change Have lost me Margaretta: And yet '"' sadly strange That I cannot forget her! Oh queen of rural maids, Dear deve-eyed Margaretta The heart the mind upbraids That struggles to forget her! My lore, I know, will sc. m A wayward 'jovis5 tolly; But, ah! it was a dream, Most sweet, most melancholy. Were mine the world's domain, . To me 'twere fortune better To he a boy again, And dream of Margaretta. Oh! memory of the past, Why linger tu regret her? My first love is my last, For that is Margaretta. . MISCELLA S F. O U S. THE FEMALE SCOUT, A REVOLUTIONARY INCIDENT. BV 1V.H. T. HODGERS Jl'S. The devoted patriotism and indomit able courage exhibited by the American j Women, during the struggle for Independence has been the eloquent theme of many an able writer, and the subject of nvmy a gifted pen. Numberless were the instances which these noble women, unawed by terrible threats and rowaitlly insult, proved how immeasurably superior they were, if. mental and moral courage, to their base and heartless oppressors. Actuated by a sincere and unbounded love for their countrv. and Hieir countrr . - j ry's w elfate, they suffered privation and hardships, without a murmur, and bore up under trials the most severe, wi'.hout complaint. To their determined courage, and unceasing efforts, Freedom owes much. Their fervent prayers, and when necessary, their individual example, had an unbounded influence with the spirited colonists, and their approving smiles, and heart fell thanks, icndered our forefathers doubly strong in their determination to throw off the galling yoke of British tyranny. In all ages ofihe world, the influence of women over a people engaged in any "real and important undertaking has been felt and acknowledged. More especially in cases of ihe invasion of a country by a foreign power, has it made itself apparent. The invaders knew this, and against them directed their strongest efforts. The fact is a notorious one, that the American females were brutally treated, wantonly insulted, and, in many instances, cruelly wronged by the British soldiers, the subordinate officers, and often, by those of high authorities. By a fev of the commanders 'tis true, they were always treated with the delicate consideration ai.d gentle care which
is ever their due, but many others to their bidding them defiance. The boy far from everlasting shame, I e it lemetnbered, ac-; exhibiting any sy mptoms of fear, appearted as though literally de void of all the J ed entirely to forget his own danger, and ennobling sentiments of the human heart, ! to A isrrgatd his own personal safety in
r.nd totally lost to all feelings, except the gratification of their own base passions and vindictive malice. Kate So! ma was young, the breezes of of but seventeen fiimmers had kissed her cheek; still she w as in heart nnd mind, n woman. She was not what the world terms beautiful her countenance was not one that at first sight would impress. the beholder with a profound admiration, or attiact much more than a passing glance. The uncommon regularity of her features, cave her somewhat of a plain, unattractive appearance, but the express ion of firm resolve blended with affectionate tenderness, that sat upon her expan sive brow, rendered Iter features, even when in repose, highly interesting. Of education he could boast but little, but being posessed of good natural abilities, and habitually observant and reflecting, she had acquired a store of useful knowledge, and was intelligent far beyond what her years and advantages would seem to promise. The teeming volume of Nature was her class-book, her wondrous works her constant study; and with a soul sensitively alive to all the iiiblimity and beauty of Nature's teachings, w hat wonder that her progress was rapid and certain. It is not in hustling towns or crowded cities, that the mental faculties are slroncest or earliest developed, or the emotions of the heart deepest or most ardent. It does not require the crowded ball room, the fascinatir.g quadriile, the voluptuous waltz, the fashionable promenade, the gorgeous spectacle, the unceasing round of g.iety, the flattery and adttlation, or hypocritical sycophancy of a conventional life, to call into active existence the finer seniimen9 of the human heart. Far from it. The God of Nature has implanted in each individual breast an irresistible impulse, a "strong necessity," of loving; and the unsophisticated, unlettered maiden of the forest, nurtured among the wild hills, i:i the humblest cottage, is -m-ich the oVj-rt of Mis rare and proTtlon as th; susccp:.'.le f-ghing beauty i:i pib-.ee halls. As soon as they were gone, Welling and his comrade hurried forth to convey the intelligence of the intended attack, and by an. ticipating the arrival of the British to ensure them a warm reception. As they reached the Fpot where the fugitives had turned rlT, they divided into parties and commenced the search of the surrounding wood. Welling reflected for a few moments upon the course lie would pursue, then ! beckoning his companion to follow, he J dismounted and retraced his steps towards j the bain. They reached it in safely, and as they tliotioiit, uinifcovetei;; nut a dragoon had ren aii'.cd rn E'iard, and seeing them enter, sounded a recall, which brought the w hole party instan'ly back. The soldiers tushed in and carefully securing the entrance, commanded the scouts to surrender. But Welling, who knew he could expect no mercy from the hands of the soldiers, bade his companion prepare for the worst, and stood like a lion at bay. ; his anxiety for that of his elder comrade. The officer nettled at the cool obstinacy of the scouts, ordered his men to fire upon them. At the fir:.t mention of the word "fire," the boy threw himself before hi comrade, and received the contents of the ti'.itket levelled at him. The youth fell, faintly 'jaculal.ng the name of Robert'.' The sound of the loved voice, no longer disguised, told him that it w as his own Kale." 'Fiends.' he excla imed, lynu haveshiin The soldiers fell back thunder-stricken and poor Kate, breathed forgiveness to her murderers, and a prayer for her lover, yielded liet spirit to the God that gave ii: 'Cowards.' he cried, 'you have robbed me of all I held dear on earth you have taken from me the only being for w hom I would wish to live; my life is n longer of any worth to me villians do your work! but stop before you murder me, this to the cowardly Bssassin.' The Feldier who had fired the dead shot, lay dead upon the floor, and the next instand, Robert Welling fell, pietced by a dozen ball! Not content, the blood -thiisty ruffians pluneed their bayonets into his prostrate body, and spurned it with their feet. A cry from one of their number arrested the horrid butchery, and made them sensible of their own dangetous situation. The straw at one t-ide of the bain had taken fire from the wad of Welling's pistol, and whilst thy were engaged in their blood-thirsty work, had gained fear ful headway. The eoldiers rushed al once to the doors, but in addition to their own fastenings, a true hearted negroe servant in the Hughs' family (who with his household had been compelled to remove to make room for the so'diets) liai securely bolted and barricaded them without, and deprived thetn of any hope of escape. The flames increased tapidly, and in a few moments the whole building was inveloped in a sheet of living fire. n..mat Tr-nton, X.J. in 1T?J a grandson or hii oil.. .-r .!:-.. s. was a school Imatr of the writer, ar.l - (n , ,, .f Colonel Stevcn'a Calilorni
