AMERICAN.
BROOKVILLE, INDIANA.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 1847.
FOR PRESIDENT IX 1848, t.'cii. Z ACIIAUY TAYLOR . "In no raw " I permit mTu'lf tn be ihi can 'iiiate cf anv party, or yield mvsi-lf tn party fhem." " I he (nod of all partiM. and thr National (nod, Mould b my preaiand absorbing aim." Gen. Taylor.
GKX. TAYLOR. Our flag is tbere. In placing it there we do it without the least lingering doubt of its propriety. Our eTery eense, reason and impulse appro fcthe act. Our pride, pleasure, and patriotism, are enlisted. lie i? our first choice without any considerations of justice or expediency. His virtues as a citizen his bravery as a soldier his practical knowledge as a civilian his tact, energy and fertility of resource as a general his personal Industry and temperate habits as a man and his wisdom as a statesman, point him out as the man of the ago. We are therefore for Geh. Taylor for the Presidency, without condition or reserve. The character, varied talent and services of tho man, command so much of our esteem, that we place no bounds to our devotion, except that contained in the sacred decalogue against idolitry. There is not one single trail in his character, rcsidence.occupation or inclinations, we would have changed, if we could. We believe he is the man designed to break down the blighting curse of party spirit in our community, and to drive from the high places in our government, corrupt political profligacy and management. His Roman firmness is required to meet the storm. His freedom from party bias, will permit him to act for his count ry.
John P. Gaines, now a prisoner in Mexico, is the Whig candidate for Congress iathe Covington, Ky., District. So far as heard, it is stated th.t he is leading his opponent finely. We hope he will be elected. He has proved his devotion to his country, and his votes in Congress would be given for its best interests.
THE AMERICAN.
T we present the American to the readers in the fullest dress. Having cleared away the political embarrassments which have cramped us fur a few months and having also nearly finished our engagements in another direction, we now intend to devote our time and talents to our paper. Notwithstanding the chains of political slavery have been attempted to be cast about us, yet we feel free. The whip, too, of vindictive political bigots, has been applied to us, but the only effect has been to make their meanness more prominent, and our list of subscribers has continually increased. We are alay thankful when men of little souls cut our acquaintance, and leare our company. Liberal men are suie to fi.il their places.
Durini the approaching Session of
Court, we intend to enroll numbers upon our subscription, who will allow ns a little volition. We hope also to collect much on our old list. And we would here remark, that it we have any yet on our list, who expect us to be a political slave, willing and obedient to the great moguls of any party, we respectfully ask them to withdraw, as we may hereafter wound their narrow and proscriptive spirits.
Sons of Temperance, A charter has been granted, and a Division organized at Terre Haute, being No. 94. The best citizens of Terre Haute are in the work. A charter has also been granted for a Division at Greencastle. Smoeofthe professors of the college have attached their names to the petition. A charter has been granted for a Division at Boston in Wayne county. This, we believe, makes 14 Divisions in that county. The Rev. Sylvester Scoval, President or the South Hanover college, is the Worthy Patriarch of the Division in that place. The order is still prospering throughout the State. In the old Divisions there appears to be the same interest manifested, and the same exertions put forth to rescue man. Lawrenceburgh is now the only town of any considerable importance in the State, but has this anchor to the temperance cause in their midst a Division of the Sons of Temperance. Can nothing be done for that city! Party Slavery. We have this day hoisted the Taylor flag. We wish our readers to understand that in 60 doing, we do not sell ourselves, soul and body to Gen. Taylor. If he should do Arong, we shall boldly condemn the act, without feeling that we are traitors; nor shall we consider ourselves bound to support all the Utile Taylors, who may, like leeches, cling to his popularity, as their only passport to office. Political services or political devotion shall never again with us cover the rotten heart and putrid character of an office
seeker. He must have the virtue, the character and the talents of bis own. We
despise all the tricks, conduct and consequences of blind party devotion. Those who love it, let them continue to serve their master.

BROKE JAIL. On Monday night last, three gentlemen escaped from our jail. John Burgil was in for stealing horses, John Coyee for stealing a pair of pantaloons, and James Wilson for some other larceny. As is usual with most others imprisoned in our jail, they worked their way out in the night
time. They left on the floor tho following
notice of their departure, to wit: Sunday, August 3d, 1st 1343. .Tack's gone ashore, sir. Jilll wont stop by himself. C'OJ'CC is going to look for his pantaloons. Wo are, sir, Jack, Jim & Coyec. Jack (John Burgil) is a sailor, as indil hat is a sailor's right. Coyee had loet
his pantaloons, and the landlord where he
was boarding jokingly advised him to steal another man's. He did 60, was arrested
and sent to jail. The fellow, as he informs us, has merely gone to look after Lia lost
trowscrs. We hopo he will find tbetn. Jim, believing in the good old maxim, that "it is Dot good for man to be alone," was induced to go ashore with Jack. Our sheriff offers $45 reward for them.

It will be seen that the news from the army, is of interest.
O-We ask every man in this county to read Col. Marshall's speech, on the first page of this paper. Lend it to your neighbors. Then preserve the paper, and read it over every month. It is a beautiful tribute to that great Captain and good man, Gen. Taylor. A 'Tom Corwin" meeting has been called at Dublin, Wayne co., Ind. It will not go in the hoosier State. The "Republican," at Lawrenceburgh, and the "Banner," at Madison, have hoisted the Taylor flag, and every Whig paper in the State leans that way, except the Palladium, at Richmond, and the Journal, at Lafayette.
Dr. Thomas Kennedy, owing to the
pressing claims upon bis professional services, by bis kind and constant friends, de

physical body, instead of the political.

Fearful Words. Mr. Calhoun, by far the ablest and most clear sighted man of the Democratic party, said in the U. S. Senate on the 24th of last February: Every Senator knew that ha was opposed to the war: but no one knew the depth of lhat opposition but himself. In one short hour after the act of recognition of the war passed, he had said to his friends lhat a deed had been done from which the country would scarcely recover. A curtain has been dropped between him and the future, and for the first time in life, the future was shutout from his view.
