He found Fiorence rather worse than he had ex pecied lo find her fuun her fniher'a description. Her symptoms indicated eiy considerable iiifhimatton in her chest, al teoisgh he was not able to determinate its exact location. In the hopf of subduing lius inflatnation before it cotld do any serious injury, he applied a blis'.er along
ihe sternum, and waited until next morning to see the effect produced by this treatment. Bui it did nol prove as salivary rs he had expected. The patient snll complained of a pain that extended to her right shoulder, and was greatly
Buamnted ll sue aueinpieu to tac a deep inspiration. Bui His not our inten'ion to trace the prepress of disease, ll is sufficient for our purpose tossy, that without any very serious or long continued illness on the part of Florence, the conreqoences of the cold liiken at the window was such an Irritation of her lunus highly susceptible to disease from birth as to cause the formation of w hal ate know n lo physicians ts tubercles, or little foreign bodies thai become in time the centres of so many absceses, and ultimately cause such a destruction of the lungs as to produce death. When these are once formed, thete is little if any hope of a cure. Fiom this period, al'hough Florence
recovered in a short time from the acute jymtoms produced by the cold, she never felt entirely well. In the course of a few months, a slight cough, from tickling
in the chest, begun to show itself, which at times, was quite troublesome. Some
times her cheeks would be flushed, and
her ryes deeply brilliant; and again, pale
iipss would overspread her countenance
and her eyes become dull and almost ex
pressionless. Her appetite also varied al tunes being voracious, and then failing
almost entirely.
A vear had scarcely passed, before
w akenina night-sweats made their appear
ance. The cough had increased, and was
s. onetimes very severe, accompanied by
onlr a scant v mucous expectoration. Soon
fter this time, however, the cough became less setf re, but the expectoration was fuller, and of a quality lo indicate too plainly thst the tubercles h3d become abscesses and were nw discharging themselves. From this peiiol, all the worst symptoms increased. In hope of relief from
chsr.ne of clt-nate. Mr. Cranston took
daughter tv Cuba. But ibis was of no avail. The d.sease was loo deeply scaled
lor climatto have any effect. In sixj month he returned, hopeless ahi aim on heartbroken. This was ihe last tie that hound him to life. The w ife of his bosom and three children had already been taken from him, and now the last remainit g one w as about to be stricken down at his side. But srief and painful anxieties availed rvn. Death too surely marked his victim. Nor w as he the only sufferer in view of this great beieavment. One worthy of his dauehtet best affections ene for
whom she was in every fined to make a loving companion thtough liTe had won her heait. But he had a rival more poweifnl than he, she was not destined lobe his bride of Death. The dreaded event at last transpired. The dim light that had long burned low and with a fitful flame, expired, leaving the father's heart in darkness. His cup w as full. Life had no severer pang, no bitterer portion for him. In a few years he too went down to the grave. Need we add another word? Is not ihe
lesson we have sought to teach clearly comprehended, and fooibly enough impressed upon the mind? Here we have sad results of a thonshtless w e had M sai-l crimi-ia' disregard of heabh -evj -:il S I .'It tlililii U i0 !..-.?-
