lovef1, a large concourse attended tue tur.eral obequse!, and -hed tears over her early tomb. When the coffin was opened for the last look before consigning it to the exton, I observed u;.on the glass a dampness like a breath upon a looking (Insa. The horrible suspicion that she was alive fished upon me end I whis

pered my suspicion to my companion. Coolly taking his handkerchief from his pocket, to conceal by the act my manifest agitation, he rubbed the gUss lo convince me it was a mist upon the outside occasioned by the humidity of the atmosphere. A gentli rubbing rendered it perfectly

riear, and this apparently satisfied him;i

ini i cuuiu see, oy mo ueruti9 sinnnt tf bin mouth, that he was not at ease. "Perhaps-," thoug fit I, "he is afraid we rha!l be supected, if we show too much In teres'; or, may be he prefers to satisfy himself, before he excites the feelings cl fi lends." The interval between the depositing of the body in the vault, and the dispersion of the crowd, seemed endles. I was o iinr.t';ent as to excite attention, and as I

w. alked away I overheard several remarks, which, at any other time, I should have considered prejudicial to my reputation. I had heard of instances where the prematurely buried had revived and sought to release themselves, and the honor of such a condition so worked upon my imagination, thai I could not refrain from urpir.jf the sexton to visit ihe tomb during the afternoon and evening alleging the moisture upon the glass os my only reason. Agreeably to my suggestion, lie did so; and at. ten o'clock, called to assure me I need have no further alarm she was as dead as a door nail. About twelve o'clock Dr. S. called on me for my promised assistance. I found myself so f; under the influence of my former fears, that I consented to go only on the condition lhat lie would apply restoratives in case he removed her from the vault to his office.

This he promised and we proceeded.

Th keva bv the readv ourtesv of the

sexton, were already in his possession; and a few shovels full of eaith 01 ly obstructed

our operation, we were scon at work with in.

To remove the coffin from its place and

lift the lid, was but the work of a moment

We soon had the body cut and stretched upon a temporary table, made by placing boards across several piles of coffins. The limbs of the poor eirl were relaxed, and I half fancied 1 could perceive a qui verins of the flet-h as we raised her from her narrow bed.

The glare of the hntetn gave a tinge cf (

redness on her cheeks, and altogether, I could not but believe life still remained. To satisfy m self that it was not so, I secretly applied my lance to the left arm. while my companion was busy in looseing and disrobing the body. At the first prick of the lancet, blood flowed, and almost immediately the g'ul opened her eyes, with a sigh like one recovering from a swoon. Dr. S prang up like one demented. Life in a tomb he had not anticipated. He regarded my suspicion as but the effervescence of a weak brain, and had not cherished the remotest intention of fulfilling his contract to restore life if possible. Recognizing the doctor after a mo-

mem' hesitation, she timidly inquired,;

"Where am I? How long have I slept7 I thought they were going to bury me I'm glad it is a dream." What to say, or how to ait, under such circumstances, w e knw not, nor had we time to reflect; for her dim vWion hsd recognized the place we were in, and also the ptobable eirand id which we were engaged. Wiih an expression of horror I hope never again to see on mortal countenance, she 6hiank back into the stupor from which we had aroused her. In vain we tried the lancet as well as every other moans in our power. She was now apparently dead, and ne could do ro more than decently arrange her in the coffin, and pu: every thinp as nearly es possible in us farmer position.
