The "Spy ' Washington," in hi i3-frto the New York Courier an J quirw, writs as follows, with reference tJ, negotiations for peace: Since the battle of Cerro Gor do. Gen. Scott has been much more m-lively employed in aidins the negotiation than in military operations. The General is in constant and confidential intercourse with many of the leading men in Mexico, especially the clergy, and ha9 acquired in lit at country an influence never obtained by any other American. He is a regular it-idant of the Catholic Church, and carries his candle as gravely in religious processions, as the greatest of their devotees. He does not profess lo be a Cath rlic but to entertain a great respect for ihat venerable religion whih is professed J by several of his childrajj; jnp avows:-, as hi, determination to protect "the xhtrrt j et ai! mzaras. . j - J The "Sov ." in his last letter, masf.fi singular statement annexed: n " V'jK? ' One of the obstacles to m speedy peace is an anomaly in the history, of wars and negotiations. Some of the most Intelligent and patriotic Mexicans do not defire peace et present. They wish the contest to continue at least in name, in the sincere hope that the United States may by prolongation of the struggle and a complete military occupation, be induced finally to take in Mexico as a part or the American Un'on. This is no less strange than true. The thing is of course, imppossible. We cannot incorporate the Mexican people, or any considerable portion of them. Gen. Scott is endeavoring to dissipate this lelusiop; but he finds it difficult to convince the Mexicans that we would not consent to take the whole country." The New Indiana Regiment. We saw hail fall here as large as a hen's egg; and we are told ihat some two nr thr mii south from here a great deal of it was as) large as goose eggs, and, after the storm was over, ihe ground was covered in some places to the depth of two inches.. The wheat, in some instances, is totally destroyed; the fruit is knocked off the trees, the corn riddled to pieces, and the ground in the woods is covered with leaves and limbs that were knocked off by the hail. One gentleman informs us that a cake of ice fell on his house and broke a hole through the roof. Fortuntely there was but very little wind, and consequently but little damage done in the way of breaking windows. Greensburgh lien A Remarkable Cavern. A letter from Lynchburg, to one of the editors, of the 14th inst., informs us that the wheat and at crops in that region have improved wonderfully since the fine rains have set in; and it is now thought that a near approach to an average crop mav be calculated upon, unless some tin foreseen accident shall happen. Rich Enq. Crops in the H 'est. The following is an extractor a merchant's letter, dated Detroit. June 9, 1817. Three days since freights to Duff-ilo were 33a, yesterday 20c, to-day 25 els. The reports from the interior of onr State, in reference to the coming crop, received wthin the last ten d ys. are of an alarming character. The fly is doing extensive damage, and from many of our best wheat counties we are not to have more th in enotiiih to supply home wants. Thousand of acres have been ploughed up within the lat ten days. These pictures are generally highly colored; I have no doubt, however, but that in the main they are true of us in regard to this year. From Northern Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin we hear similar stories. Wabash lour. A Sad A scident. We coppy the follow, ing fioin the Si. The men rushed to the bow fur safety, when I that sank also, precipitating the w hole in to ihe river, which was 12 feet deep. Most or them were unable lo swim, and in their alarm and struggles Tor life, they clung together, and in a Tew moment ten .f,i,, , . , of them sank tn a watery e ave-the rest j being rescued with great difficulty.
