your informant was led into error because Brig. Gert.Lane was with the 2J regiment. It is an enor that any regiment ever hesitated fur a tingle instant, and it has the
sid'inul marit of being tine in the action,1 that did not retreat.
Our position was in the road, by vuncn alone the artillery of the enemy could be brought forward.and only exposed to artillery fire i:nttl the2J Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and Mississippi troops had been successively driven hack by the overpowering force of the enemy. The enemy having heen twice repulsed in our front, and having completely turned our left
flank and taken position near the mountain, we were nidered there, and formed
a junction with Col. Davis's regiment and the 21 In liaiiians, which had been rallied, this futce advanced upon the infantry and lancers, and kept up a biisk fire until it was ordered to cease by Gen. Taylor. It was now lint the lancers made the charge alluded to. and for the repulse of which credit is given to the MitsUsippirns.

ome sixty thousand people. We arrived there on the oih of February and left on the 15th. We paseed a number of 6m.ll towns containing from three to eight thousand people, and arrived at Qisretaro on the 2Iet. This city I had never heard of before. It it the handsomest I have teen and its reported population varried from thirty ta seventy thousand 8 uls. The buildings are truly superb and the aqueduct, which supplies the city with water, isindetd mignifieient. We reached the vicinity of this place (Mexico) on the 27th. when our conductors learning that the civil war had broken oat letaineoUus at a point three leagues off. for a day and a half to preserve us from the
mob as they said, but as we found out, to
rive tbeinselvespas not knowing; which party was uppermost, they did not know to which they bolonged. We reached the cakl'.a after midnight and were emuggled into it with great privacy. A few moinni afier we entered an alarm was raised by discharga of four guns in rapid succession. We hesrd sotuis one say four mn were killed and ten had escaped. We no ascertained that n-e were lodged in a prison containing two hundred convicted felons. The escape undo it necessary lo clange their cells and they were bro ught out and pnssed through the yard where we were, chained tvio and two. and placed in eafcr dungeons. The fiht w as yet raging in the city and I shall never forget my eutree into the city of the Aztecs. The civil war lasted till abr ut tie 20th u't., when the arrival of Santa Anna put an end to it. Whether there were many killed during the twenty da)s fight, I do
not know; but it is said that a great many old women, cats and dogs were tslain. The insurrection ivas a godsend to Santa Anna, as it furnished him a small j ib after his dreadful defeat at Buena Vista He left kere yesterday with the shattered fragments, of his army, pretending that he would immolate himself, if need be. ketweeu thia and Vera Cruz should (Jen. Scott attempt to march upon the capital. This nation, so far as Government is concerned, may be said to be annihilated. They are without an army, money, or men capable of ruling. Santa Anna himself is said to be superior lo his countrymen only in knowledge of the Mexican
character and his ability in humbugging them. Whether a peace would follow the capture of this city is extremely uncertain: amongst our friends here the opinion w it will not. Gen. Scott having taken many prisoners at Vera Cruz, we are in daily expectation of being xechanged,in w hich case we will rejoin the army and prbably return lo the United States as soon as we w ould had we never been captured! Santa Anna appears to be as forgetful as his fiiend La Vega, as it seems to have escaped his memory that he had rng3ged with Gen. Toylor for the release of these prisoners. EJ4. I have written you several letters since my captivity. Althoush in the city of Mexico I have aeen but finle or it and that little through the iron gratings of the castle of Santiago. Whether w e shall be indulged with a view of it after our release, I know not. 1 trust we shall. Your affectioned brother. JXO. P. GAISES.
The 2J Indiana resiment opened the
'ball" on the 23d, and 1 undertake to say that they deseive credit for maintaining their first position as long as they did;they were on the extreme left, next the mountain. They stood firm and steady as veterans, and exchanged 21 rounds with a vastly superior force in their front with their entire line, from left to right, raked by a deadly fire of grape and canister from one 24 pounder and two 18 ponders with their right flank threatened, and their tear exposed from a force that was contending with the riflemen upon the moun
tainthey diJ not retreat until they were ordered tod.i so by their commander, as in evidence before a court of inquiry now
silting.) The only possible charge which can be made in truth against the 2d Indianians is, thai they did not rally as soon as they should; but the fault is not with them, but with the commander who designated no force or point for them to rally upon. It would be criminal in me to permit our brave s'ddiers, wht have done so much to sustain their country's honor, to sleep under the gross injustice which your article does them. and I respectfully request that you will give this note a place in your paper. Very respectfully, J. II. LANE. Col. Comand'g.3J Keg't. la. Vol.

The Indiana Volunteers at Baena Vista. The New Orleans Delta publishes the following communication from Col. Lane, oUhe3J regiment Indiana Volunteers, in refutation of the charges that have been circulated itt relation to the conduct nf the Indianiani at IhebatUeof Duena Vista: Cmf Dcema Vista, April 19,1847. EiU. Delta: It is an error that the Indiana brigade, as a brigade, was in the fight. The 1st regiment was on the Rio Grande, ihe Ud on ihe cx-
From Gen. Taylor's Camp. The following letter we find in the New Orleans Picayune of llie 13;h: Im Camp, Walnut Spring, (near Monterey, April 27, 1817. Tlie 1st Mi?i.sippi regiment, now cut down ti two hundred and odd men, accompany a train as far as Cerralvo and remain there to garrison that place until their term of service expire?, which will be next month or early in June. A train pf 127 wagons arrived from Carmargo on Friday, and brought a mail from the Siats-i, and among it a number of communications for Gen. Taylor from the War Department. If the ondit is true here, the department has not condescended to take the slightest notice of the general's communications for many months. Perhaps the department will begin soon to conceive that Gen. Taylor is really a person cf some little importance and de
serving of some slight occasional notice. I fear there is not much if ajiy prospect of an onward movement towards Saltillo, as there is now no fore adequate to such an undertaking. The time of nearly all the twelve months volunteers will expire very shottlv, and unlets they should desire to stay beyond their time for the purpose of going to San Luis, and it is not likely they will, there Is no prospect of a speedy movement. Now is the very time when the most vigorous measures
should be pushed, and il is unfortunate that Gen. Taylor has been left without j adequate means to operate effectively. Accounts have been received here from San Luis as late as ihe Tih inst, and they represent the Mexican army as entirely broken up and disheartened as well as the people. Mr. Fte?man, nn intelligent, American, who has lived in San Luis, for a number of years, arrived yesterday fiom that place. He states with the greatest confidence that not more than 10,000 of Santa Anna's army, engaged at Buena Vista, reached San Luis. Hundreds deserted on the march, and hundreds died on tho road or were left sick and wounded. He says that the entire length of the road presents a most sad feature graves on every side, nnburied bodies, Eick and broken down soldiers in all the ranchos, and every other evidence of a routed, dispirited, starved and broken down army. Is it to be supposed that Mexico ever can raise another army of
such strength? In this region it
