Dipened the burning licbt of day, A Abraham sat within his tr.t. His mind composed in hearcnly bent; When three fair grangers, pain? by, Slopped to acquaint him heavenly. Then hastening to his apouse, he said, "'.Sarah arie, prepare lomt V"', For stranger three hare stopped to share Our hospitali ty and fart;' And o his herd he went and caught The fatted calf, and quickly brought, And slew and set before his guests. The dainties of his homely ."vast. And they did eat, were filled, and rose, And turned and said, 'we would disclose To thee, oh! man of uprightness. That which our Lord commanded us: Ton city, toward t w suv. .hern ky, lias long sent u p a grievous err Of sin against high heaven' I ord, And would not deign to hear his wore, "We eome, as messengers from hcaren, To do 'he work our Ood hath given; And we'll dtstroy, with flame and fire. Oh! wilt thou scourge it w ith thy rod. Omnipotent, Eternal God?" And, thus displaying mercy wide, The God of heaven and earth replied: 'If ten I find abiding there Who pay their rows to me in grayer, I'll not destroy, but st ill w ill spare This people, that all things be fair, And that no thing be lacked that would Contribute to the general good-" 'T was even, and the ge ntle breeze Fanned w ith soft brt at h the w aving trees, As in the fated city's gate There sat a man, with look sedate, Wrapped tip in deep -s revery Of time, past, pit sent, or futurity, We know not which, hut sure t'was so, He thought as Christians always do. When lifting from the ground bis eye He spied two Angels drawing nigh. And rose and downwards bowed his face, With humble and becoming grace, Saying, " Turn m my lodge till dawn of dsy, When you can rise and go your way." Entreated much, they intend in. But, ere itiey slept, the men of sin The house encompassed round about, And called t-j Lot to bring them out. But he, apprised of their design. Would not his heavenly guest resign. But answered, "brethren, I pray. Do not behave o wickedly." Incensed at this reproof, the more They forw ard rushed to break the door; But here God's power interposed. And blindness sore their eyelids closed. Thi Ang1, turning, said to Lot, Thy kiusmen call, and bring theri out. And hie thee from this place away, Ere the wrath of God, in fierce array. Shall burst in flame upon the place. And quite consume this kicked race;" And as he paused, as though to stay, They seized him, and hi family. And took them forth wiihout the ciy. And set them in a plate of safety. A lurid cloud, with hideous glare, N'o spread the sky, and filled the air With brimstone vapors, odious sctnts, While from ita fiery battlement A torrent gushed, in flaming 1 ed, And hellish devastation pr:ad; 'Twas done! the city was a blank; In deepest night, d.a, down it sank; And whre it walls and tower stood. Now ebbs the murky, sullen flood! Thus, of this city of antiquity, Sunk down bneath its own iniquity. Our humble verse hath given it, A taken from the "Holy Writ." And mans- such has since transpired, For which the powers of heaven conspired To pour it wrathful via', i", To punish wicked men for sin? Why was Tort Royal sunk? or whyWas old C atania's destiny So sad? or why did Rabyloti, With all her pageantry, go down. And sink into oblivion? Who done it all' What was his name: 1 aL; can any tell the same? 'Twas Sin; the vile accomplice, black, of death, Who drew his bloody dagger from its sheath And scattered devastation through the land Above, beneath, around, on every hand. God save my country from its ravages. And fill our land with righteous usages, And laws of all the world the best. And make each man a fit example Tor the rest Breekiille, leb. IS47.
