Anxieties of a Saflort Life. jf THE KET. MR. ABBOT, OF JUNTBCCKT. A man was apeaking a'few days ago of the emotion wiih which he was overwhalHieJ, when he bade adieu to his family on ,asl VJ a8e- Tnft ship on which he 10 eai' wa9 11 Edgarton ,n Martha's Vineyard. The packet was at the wharf hic'h Wa? w convey him from Nantucket to the ship. lie went down in the morning and saw alt his private sea stores towed away tn the sloop and then return -eJ to his home to take leaveof his wife jdi children. His wife wat sitting at the fe-siJe, struggling in vain to restrain her liit. She had an infanta few months old in Uer arm5 ani wilh ner foot was rocking the cradle in "wVich lay another little daughter about three years of age, with her cheek flushed with a burning ferer. No pen can describe the anguish of such a parting. It is almost like the bitterness of death. The departing father imprints a kiss upon the cheek of his child- Four yeirs will pass away ere he trill again take that child in his arms. Lanng his wife sobbing in anguish, he closes the door of his house behind him. fjur year must elapse ere he can cross that threshold agai.i. One sea captain upon this island has passed but seven yeas out of forty one upon the land, i i ir mid to me a few evening am I
hive been married eleven jears,anJ counting all the days my husband has been at home since'our marriage, it amounts to fcjtthree hundred and sixty days. He is njw absent, .having been gona fifteen month, and two years must undoubtedly elapse before his wife can see his face again, and when he shall return, it will be merely a visit to hts family fur a few jiionths, when he will again bid them adieu for another four years absenceI asked the lady the other day how jnsny letters she wrote to her husband during his last voyage. "One hundred," was the answer. "And how many did he receive?" 'Six." The invariable rule is to write by every ship that leaves this port, or New Bedford, or any other port that may be heard of; for the Pacific Ocean. And yet ihechances are very ami!!, that any two ships will meet oa this boundless expanse. Ii sometimes happens that a ship returns, when those on board have not heard one ord from their families during the whole periol of their absence. Itn iine then the feelings of a husband and father, who returns to the harbor of Nantucket, after the separation of forty-eight mouth?, du ring which time he has heard no tidings whatever from his home. He sees the boat pushing off from the wharves which is to bring him the tidings of weal and wo. lie stands pale and trembling pacing the deck with emotion which he endeavors to conceal. A friend in the boat greets him with a smile, and says, ' Captain, your family are all well." Or peihaps he says, 'Captain, I have heavy news for you, your wife died two years and a half ago.'i A young man left this island last summer leaving in his quiet home a young and beautiful wife, and an infant child. The wife and child are now both in the grave. Rat the husband knows not, and probably will not anow it for months to come. Ha perhaps falls asleep erery n'ght thinking of the loved ona le t at lys fireside, little imagin;ng tint lli.-y aw both cold in death. On a bright aaaimer aiternoon, the te'eprapb announces that a Cape Horn slop has appeared in the horiz in, and immedi ately the stars and stripes of our na tional banner are unfurled from out flig starT sending wave of emotion through lt toivn. Many families are hojiirg tint it is the ship in which their triontis are to return and all are hoping" for tidings from the absent. Sjon tha namo of the ship is announced. And then there is an casrer contention with the boys to be the first bet-er of the joyful tidings to the wife m thecaptaiii. For which service a silver i:,ir u tba established and invaria ble fee. And who can describa tho feelicje which must then agitate the-bosom of the iv lie! l erhaps sha his iiiirj of no things from the ship for more than a year. I renia.mg with excitement, tho dresses Ifrtelf to meet bcr husband. "Is he alive," fiasays ti herself, "or am I a widow, and these poor childred orphans!" She waiks ibo'it the room unable to compose herself -ficient'y to sit down; esgorly is she lot k:ng sat of the window and down the street. Sis sees a man with hurrier5 step turn ihe oreer, and a little bny hold of his Inn J. Tes it is he. AnJ her little son has gone cmii la the boat and round his father. Or, yvrhaps. instead cf this, she sees two of her w ghtiors returning slowly and sadly and Erecting their slops to her door. It is the l-.e.l ol her husband's death. We all left New Orleans on the 17th, After 11 days rough sail we landed l.cre, and a great sail we had of it. Oar Uapt. said he would make the trip in three days, but the wind wa unfavorable and we made a long trip of it. The rest of the regiment left at the same time we did, but they beat us in rive days. One of the chips saw us in a gale by which wo lost our topgallant sail tut no serious damage was done; and being out a good while they thought we were lost, and I understand that Dr. J. There are near lU.uu'l men encamped her som dying every day with the measles, am some with fever the Indiana troops have lost eight or ten 6im:e they left New Albany, but none of the Dearborn Volunteers have died. We have been organizd into a rifle company and drew our rifles to-day. I expect we will have a hard tuns of it, but we are all ia good spirits, P. M.U. A Lodon Brewery. J. Grand Division. The Grand Div ision of Indiana Meets at Drookvillemi the liih of October, and not on the first Saturday In October as stated in the Sons of Temperance Record of Cincinnati. We make this correction, fearing jhat paper might lead some of our Divisions into trouble. Fountain Division Xo 21 A petition had been received from Covington, lud. and a charter granted for a Division of the Sons of Temperance at ihat place. The towns along the Wabash appear to be waking up on ihe subject of Temperance. The Order of Sons of T nperauce is a worthy scion of the United States. It t.s already taken measures to join the linked States in the invasion of California, and take pjssession of the country "for the country's good." A chatter ha been granted on the petition of numerous applicants, inclu ling one Capt. and two or three Lieutenants, belonging to the New York California legion, going1 out under the command of Col. Stevenson, present lying at Govern nors Island, New York. Success attend the joint occupancy. Slay the "Sons" multiply and replenish the whole of California. Philadelphia Paper. fjrTheSins of Temperance hold u.o a banner "streaming in lig'it," wo can trace them every where by the star like "milky" way they leave. Their white collars are dotting the bosoiu of the counlr every where. Already, the "itcd. While and Blue" of the Order, waves over some leniy-three Stales and "I erritonea, and before one year expires, it will sing aloft as the standard of Tempi'ane in every State and Territory of the Union, from .Maine to Texas.
