It will he remembered that the Louisianian left Vera Cruz on the loth ultimo. Wash. Union. The Picayune stys, "the Mexican papers mini positively that the number of the kille l ar.J wounded on the part of the Americans was more considerable than that of the Mexicans. General Arista seta dawn the f ree of the Mexicans in the action of the Mh at 3,000 men and twelve pieces of artillery; our number was stated to have been ",000 men more or less, with great superiority in artillery. The destruction by our artillery is represented to have been se.ere. Over three thousand shots are siid to have been fired at the Mexicans by our artillery, between 3 o'clock, p. el, and 7 in the evening-, wLcn the tattle closed. The Mexicans, in the same time, discbsrjed ssven bun-red and fifty shots from their artillery. The Mexican loss on the cth is set down at "32 killed, wounded and .T.issins and ll.ey claimed to have retained possession of the field cf bitlle. We have not the inscription of the act ion of the Pih by Gen. Arista, as we had supposed in our hsale. but we hive by a journal friendly to him. His position i represented to have beaa greatly forced, notwithstanding the repeated charges of the Mexican cavalry, the last of which was headod by Aristy in person, and during which they actually "cut to pieces t'0 entire companies of the Americans." The loss of the Americans is still represented as superior to that of the Mexicans. The papers make very patriotic appeal to s'.l good citizens to come op now to the : rescue of the country. Even El Hepublico ; claims that "the President is making and J will make nev: efforts as great as the emer- i eney requires. " It urges all to mase the j sacrifice which will be demanded, and ap-1 peals to the Congress about to assemble to sustain the war at every possible hazard ltre:o:nmen(l3 the putting aside of personal distentions, and denounces those who would resort to foreign intervention to bring about a peace. El Republican1! praises Arista for the eersonal gallantry he displayed in the action, and hopes yet to see Irs name associated with victories. "The general who Las fought valliantly with the foreign en emies of his country has a solid title tothe love of his fellow citizens." The taking of Metamoros without n single struggle has, in a great measure, quelled the fears of those who believed that the Mexicans were determined to prosecute with unabating vigor, the attack upon Fort Brown. Oa the morning of the 17ih uU. about suntise, Gen. Ampudia gave; the signal that he wished to hold a parley with Gen. Taylor. He came over to the j American camp in person, and requested j of General Taylor the granting of an ar-j ntistice. To this Gen. Taylor replied, Sir, the time for asking a.miMice is past;, you should have thought of this before; it : is now too Lite to think of such a thing." j General AmpuJia then desired a suspen-j sion of hostilities. This also Gen. Taylor I positively refused, stating that he had ' brought al! lis raunon tothe fort and he j w as determined that they should render j some service, at the same time pointing to! ihe cannon and its position. Ampudia then J asked Gen. Taylor if in surrendering Met-1 amoros he would be allowed to accept the j tiovernment property. Gn. Taylor piied no, and that he intended to take rethe! town at 4 A. M. the next day. Ampudia then retired, and Gen. Taylor marched ! his for :es tip to Fort Crown an 1 al daylight J commensed crossing. No resistance was j offered by the Mexicans on the bank, and it is said that many of them assisted in : landing the boats. One officer, a lieuten-1 ant of the cavalry, was drowned in cros ; sing the river. After being crossed they! weiemetby a nnmber of ciiisens and! Mexican officers who desired to know of! Oert. Taylor if they could retain the gov- j eminent property. Gen. Taylor replied that he wanted all the town. The American force then marched into the place, and Adj. Bliss then rode up to the fort and sounding the parley, demanded the surrender ot the town. He was asked if the government property would be excepted; he replied that nothing could be reui.ned; all niu-t be surrendered. The Mexican flag was immediately hauled down, and the star-spangled banner ran lip. The c.t.zens joined loudly in the cheering of the army. A sufficient force was then placed in the fort, and the army, after moving through the town, drew off and encamped in the vicinity. Not a gun was tired. Ampudia retreated from the town immediately after the interview with Gen. Tavlor. Kilitary Hatters. Troops still continu- to come in. Yesterday 300 men passed through the city to Camp Washington. We believe they came from Mansfield. The troop? here1 3!i on their way, are supposed to acceed il;e number called for by at least 600. Gen.
