Harrisox. May 1st, 1843. ro. darkson: For the encouragement of those engaged in the present great Temperance Reformation, I will just say that our prospect is very fluttering. The Order of Sons of Temperance was instituted in Harrison about three months ago; since which time we have initiated more than 50, a majority of w horn are true hearted young men. We have also several of the most influential men in our community zealously engaged in the cause. Strong opposition was at first agreed upon by the grogsellers, in order to defeat us in our efforts to rescue the victims of intemperance; they even prophesied that we could not sustain ourselves faro months, but already we hear of very little being said against the Order. Our Officers are:

to see them blacked occasionally by coming in contact with pot hooks and tramel.', and calloused by a day or two's hard rub at the washing hoard. Pretty fingers indeed! what are they good for, but to move overa piano, or to stick through gold rings?
Like many of the vain tilings or earth, they are kept for show, and nothing more. For our part, we wauld rather see them wore out in actual service, and as tough as a coquette's conscience, than so tender that a fly's foot will make an impression upon ihem. Portland Tribune.

Letter from the seat of War.S! We have a Picayune of the 21u inst.,
' ona da? later than our previous advices, hy
wh-.ch we learn tuat Hie report 01 a declaration of War by Mexico is a Ua ax. Late from Brazos Santiago. The U. S: steamer Col. Harney, says the Picrune, arrived io port last evening brazos Santiago, whence she sailed on the 16th inst. tebe bringing us advices from Gen. Taylor's tamp down to the l'2lh instant. The accounts which have already been
rif.n of Gen. Tavlora march to the Rio
Grande, and of his position opposite Mata
moros are fully connrmaJ. Gen laylor took up his position on the 23th ult- directly opposite Matamoros, and within reach of
the Maxican batteries, uueriy disregar
ding these, he proceeded to plant four li
pounders, so that at any moment he coulu
batter down the city at pleasure. Thus au"airs remained till the 11th inst., when Gen. Amnudia arrived at Matamo
ros. The following day Gen. Auipuida sent a written notice to Gen. Taylor requiring him to retire at onca to the left bank of the Nueces, and intimating to him that his persistence in maintaining Lis position would be deemed an avert act of hostility. To this Gen. Taylor replied iubstantially that he had received bis orders fiom the
I President of the United States to take up 1 1.;. nn2;;nn nnnn thft Rio Grande, and to
see that no encroachment was made upnn
our Territory. That he should obey his nntara unci rpnpl anv hostile attempt to
cross the river. At the same time he assured the Mexicans that he had no hostile design upon the people that they might re main in the undisturbed enjoymeut of their property and rights; and that his business was to resist aggression.
