Clarkson. as was noticed in thj last namber.hasbeen absent several days past instituting Jivisionsof the "Sons of Temperance'' at different points along the Ohio river and in the centra! part of the State his return may be expected, in lime, to give interest to the next number. We publish to-day as promised last week

a lengthy extract from the speech of Gen. Cass, on the Oregon question. It would be gratifying to us, and no doubt to our readers, to have given the whole of this able vindication of our rights to Oregon but its unusual length renders it impracticable.

We notice that Mr. Marshall the Whig candidate for Governor.has already opend the canvass, by addressing the citizens of Jennings and other counties, where professional engagaments called him, in attendance on their courts. Mr. Marshall is a plain practical man, po s '?sing in an eminent degree that class of tallents, known as '-common sence!" and we much mistake the character of this people if he does not make warm friends when among them. The effort of Mr. Marshall at Jennings is highly spoken of, as a satisfactory expose o! his views of State policy, and eloquent withal fully and forcibly sustaining his well earned reputation as an orator and statesman.

Gazlcy, as editor. We believe Mr. Gazley i a practical printer, but owing to the number engaged in the Printing business, he has been engaged for some years in a less honorable business that of the practice of the law. Politics here, as in Fraoklin, seems to claim but little of the attention or inteiest of the people. Opposition to Caucuses appears to be gaining ground here a.well as elsewhere. Politicians are beginning to assert their independence.

From The Editor. Cincinnati, pril 17, 1846. Last night about midnight I was awaken

cd from a sweet sleep by the cry of fire

no uncommon circumstance in this city

The light of the fire shining brightly into my room. I arose and found that the ex

tensive establishment of Miles Greenwood,

on the corner of Canal and Walnut streets, was on fire. Owing to the deficiency of

water, the firemen were entirely unable to do any thing except to prevent the furth

er spread of the flames. This was an im portant and valuable establishment im

portant to the business of the city and of

the entire West. Almost every thing io the shape of hard ware was manufactured

here; from the half inch screw to the steam

engine. It contained the only screw cut

ting establishment west of the Alleghany

Mountains. There were three building

four stories high, and the progress of the flimes was a most grand and magnificent

spectacle.

Mr. Greenwood, it is said commenced business in Cincinnati 16 years ago with

a capital of three dollar and fifty cents

and now after the application of all his en

ergy and industry, for 16 years- and hav

ing accumulated an immense fortune by

laudable and worthy enterprise, he sees it

vanish in a few hours. As we sat there viewing the scene of destruction, our heart become faint, and our Siead beat with pain. The loss is estimated at 100,900 and about 29,000 was insured. But it is said Mr. Greenwood is not discouraged, but commenced this morning before the fire

had ceased burning to rebuild his found

ries, &c. This is the energy that has made him what he is, and that will yet gather

arcund him money, prosperityand friends. This morning we are told that a wealthy

gentleman of the city handed him $500 as a loan for 100 years with-ut interest.

We were pleased to find Mr. Hibben was

well received at Madison, and that he was popular with his church and the people.

As we have only spent the Sabbath here

we have only seen the churches the peo

the discipline.

We love to hear good music in our

churches, we therefore cannot forbear an expression of the pleasure we experienc

the choir in Mr. Hibbens Church.

We have also met here our dear friend the Rev. T. A. Goodwin, who has retired from the itinerating ministry, and taken charge of a flourishing Female Seminary here. Dut notwithstanding he has located

This place is the residence of Joe Marshall, our next Governor but we hate not yet liad a peep at the lion. Judge Eggleston has removed from this place, out on
