It was on one of these occasion?, as Gervais sat at the window of his boarding house in Broadway, about nightfall, one evening in Jul, that he caught a glimpse of a beautiful creature, who was scudding along thouh the crowd. 'Heavens how lovely! I must see her I will see her again,' said he to himself, at the same lirco catching up his hat, and rspiliy leaiug the house. On leaching the pavement he was disappointed in not discovering his charmer she was lost in the crowd. Hurrying on, and pushing pedestrians to the right and left, he forced his way through the throng; and after passing three or four cross streets overtook her. He wished to, but dared not turn to have another look his courage failed him, and lie passed by her. After walking on a while, and reflecting on the probability of his ever seeing her face again, he concluded it would be impossible for him to do so then, without appearing to be impertinent; so he abandoned the project and crossed over the street. Cut soon, a reflection of the glimpse, which ais natural eyes had had of her exquisite beauty, flitted across his mind he then became resolved, and swore he would see her and speak with her. Increasing his speed in the same direction that she was going, althogh on the opposite side of the street, he soon recrossed and met her al

tional beauty to her pura blue eyes, suddenly fell; and she hesitatingly replied. 'I am indeed out late, sir, find will thankfully accept your offer, to protect me home.' His arm was offered, but it was respectfully declined. He spoke of the weather, the throng, the city, and other commonplace mattsrs, in which she joined briefly; but so pleasantly, that Gervais felt that she did not view him with distrust. Choosing a Wife. . An article lately appeared in the Religious Recorder oflast week on this subject, contains some peculiarly happy and just remarks, which we cannot forbear to Wans fer to our columns, for the good of all concerned. Excellent as is all the advice of-
impossible. 'Say to the gentleman that I
will be with him presently,' said Gervais to the servant. Then adjusting his cravat, and depositing in his pockets a pair of pistols, (to be used should necessity require h) he went down and entered the room. The visitor alvanceJ, and exhibiting tlie card which the e-vening previous had been given to his daughter, addressed him: 'Mr. Gervais, I presume, of Louisiana? The same, sir. Your name, if you please!' 'Mr. Bro'.vnlee, of the firm, of Brownlee, Openheart & Co.;' and offering his hand rontinued: 'I am hippy to see you in New York, sir. We have been looking for you for some days past. I expect, of course, to see you, Mr. Gervais, at our comptinghouse, have called ttus early, on the way down to my business, at the request of my daughter, with vrhoni you have partial acquaintance. his very soul was instantaneously charged
with the electricity of love, and as she geutly lifted higher, the drapery of her eyes, in them appeared to him fragments of broken diamonds, rising and falling in a fluid of liquid silver; and as these crsh6u, jewels danced and floated before his vision, emiiiwig the most beautiful dazzling rays, he became almost desperate; and, encircling her waist, drew her closer to him, & said tremblingly: 'Miss Ellen, had my letter heen received by you, would il have been replied to, in a way that would have Insured a continuance of our correspondence?' 'Did I not promise you, Mi. Gervais, before you left for the Sjuth, that it would?' JAye, you did,' and drawing her still nearer to him, said softly 'May I hope now, dear M,iss. Ellen?' 'Yes I will answer your letters.' 'O! my dear giil, be merciful! I do not mean iheleUersi may I hope for your regard?' an I pressing his lips to her cheek, 'your iove?'

lowing romantic anecdote;
A fe v nights ago. when the wind blew with great violence at Lyons, a gentleman w ho was walking on ono of the wharves, wrapped in a large cloak, and philisophical-ly-smoking a cigar, heard at a little distance a piercing cry, and the noise ofa heavy body falling into the Rhone. It was in the dead of nigM- The swollen river roared with fury. The night was dark, and the
wharfe desolate. Without a thought of
danger, and only following the impulse of a generous heart, he threw himself into tbe waves, lid struggled for a long time against fearful perils, and finally regained the
i shore after he had beea carried soma two
or three hundred feet by the strength of the current. He deposited on the shore the body of a woman. The brilliancy of the gas lights enabled him to observe tbe exireme
pallor ot her countenance, the disorder of her clothing, and her youtb, elegance and bea-ity. As we have already said it was midnight uo assistance was at hand and where should he convey her at this hour! To whom should he confide a burden, which had already become 60 precious! But he must decido immediately and concluded to transport lier to his own lodgings, which were not far off. The fire, which two hours previous had glowed before a convivial party, burned brightly still. His scruples of delicacy at such a moment wero overcome; and by proper assistance she was recovered from her swoon. The next day tbe pale features of this young lady were slightly tinged wiih the rose. She related to her deliverer that she bad stepped from her carriage in search of a friend who lived near one of the quays, and while passing along the river's bank ker foot had unfortunately slipped, and she bed fallen into the river. A fortnight afterwards, the newspapers announced the marriage of 51. Edouard, one of the editors of the La Ebons, with Madame Adeia Derigny, a young widow of Frankfort, whose lortunc was estimated at a million sterling. The Cincinnati Herald, ofa recent date says; "We understand that many of the second adventjpeople in the city have become utterly fanatical. They believe that the Lord has come that there ought to be no longer any marrying or giving in marriage that the elect should have none but spiritual wives, &e. Several respectable wo

An Invitation. SUMMF.R has ended, and Autumn is pone by. The hut.handu.au is blessed with an abundant crop, and health is returning1 with its usual cheerfulnet:. and com in t. The commercial men are ofTeriniy liberal prices for all the products of the year, and the fanner is hasting to the market with his surplus. A degree of prosperity is all over the land, and the means of
payment are within thereach of almost every man. Who that is in debt will not avail himself of this auspicious time to make payment? There is no time so ea.Tuf payment as w hen the ca--h is on hand, and when a debt is paid there is release from the obligation, and an end to the principal and interest. Interest is an eating moth, and it is better now to make an effort to pay off the debt than fn put it off in a subsequent
time, as we know not what thankee may come upon the country, or what adversity may befal ourselves. These remarks are respectfully addressed to all my patron, and especially to those who have owed me fur a Ion? time. N. D. G ALLIOV. Brook vt.fe, Nov 23 1845 48-ly

the conclusion: It is desirable to have an intelligent com pinion. 1 do not insist that your wife shall have what is understood by the term "an education. There are many who have thai, who are about as ignorant 69 barbarians. But seek for one who is in the habit of exercising her intellect. Who reads, reflects, has an inquisitive mind.
