Look forward cheerily; Hope to the lasiF Wonld'st thou live wearily, CWwg to the past. i Story of a Sister's Loao. : A few diys ag-o was at tht3 Sl&'e Pri' : rn at Sing' Sing, where I beard the tacts 1 am about to relate. They furnish as touching an instance of devotion as I have lately met, and they show us that in the hsmbiest walks, even tn the atmosphere of vice and crime, there may flourish some of the purest paasions, that ought to win our charities and make us respect the Jpoor. A young; man of Nova Scotia came to the city of S. York and fell among thieves. He became the companion of criminals, perhaps a criminal himself. Certainly he was arrested on a charge of crime, was wied, convicted, and sent to the prison at Sinj SingV His sister in Nova Scotia heard of the fate of her brother, and resolved to secure bis deliverance from prison. She wasjuh-Iy a servant girl and her acantv pursehvas bare ly sufficient to defray her expenses through , . .i -. ii-i , i t the long joumev to the CltV. hcil she rvsaclied rsew loric, sne tearnea mat. in ; tinly way to get her brother out of prison j was by pir.lon from the governor of the Slate, and he was at Albany. She bad no inetns to employ counsel to aid herein making the application, nor even the little that was necessary to pay her own way to the feet of the governor. She vcrnt to service in the city, 'and worked faithfully till she bad earned money enough to defray her expenses to Alhauy, and was 6oon there, a stranger, a young, unprotected woman, with no other recommendation then that of having a brutber in ihe State Prison. ie inquired the way to the house j jthe governor, obtained an audience, and 1 then with all the eloquence of love !on 5 ppent in her own bjeorr;, she made known ; her request. The governor said that he ; -nust have some reason for granting the i pvdon, or he could n t interfere: iui my nroiner is an mnicent msn,"i Slid the girl, w ho bad never for a moment indulged the thought that he could have . v r.cA I a v .1 been guilty of crime. The governor vanled something more thin her word for jit, and giving her the small comfort of Words of sympathy and kindness, sent her away to tievise ways anJ means to prove the innocence of her imprisoned brotlierSiie returned to New York, and finding a p'jee, gain resumed her domestic jser- j vce, and indefat:gab!y labored, as timet and opportunity allowed, to accomplish ' what was now the great end of her life. And whit will not preserveance and love achieve: Hopeless as the attempt might appear, she found the men who composed ihe jury that convicted her brother and obtained the names of every one of them to a petition setting forth mittigatipg circumstances in his case, and asking the interposition of executive clemency in his Jbehalf. With this petition the devoted ister hurried to Albany, and full of hope, et.e presented i. to the governor. Ho waa moved by the intensity ot her purpose the ardent strength of her affection. and Uut to fclill hesitated. Why," 8iid she, t"you must pardon my brother. 1 shall never leave you luitil you do. I shall stay just here and pray for ever; and if you wish me to go away you must pardon him, and I will bless you, and God wiil bless you the longest day you live." Her prayers and tears so far prevailed, as to extort a promise that be would make immediate inquiries into the case, and if they were satisfactory he would transmit the oaroon bv a certain fine which he named, through the mail, to the prison at Sing Sing. Once n.ore the noble-hearted girl returns to her work, and waits fjr the slew wenks to wear awav. Hut they flew faster uen sue int'Ugni thai ine lime Ot bCr brother's Iibm drew near. This was to be the reward of her toil and su fieri no On ihe very day w hicli lha governor Lac? named, the coutant 6isier inakesher appearance at the door of the prison at Singr -Sing, and informs the keeper that the had come for her brother, who on that day was lo be pardoned by tne governor. !he va6 mid that no psrdon bad been recived. lior Lean sauk within ber. The kind, hearted keeper took Ker lo his hojse, and permuted her, there waiting the arrival of the governor's letter. The next day it came the pardon cairn and she embraced her brother Uee.'and freed by 'his eister"e sacrifice and love. The paicon was accompanied by letter from the governor to the prisoner, urging Kim in strong- and impressive lano-uao-e, to conduct himself hereafter in a manner! worthy of the noble sister of w hom he had j reason to be proud, and to whose sell-tie-j living and persevering eii'orts he was 'in i tiebted for his liberty. The husbandman is blessed with an abundant crop, and health is returning with it usual cheerfulness and comfort. The commercial men are offering liberal prices for all the products of the year, and the farmer is hasting to the market with his surplus. A degree of prosperity is all over the land, and the means of payment are within thereach of almost every man. Who that is in debt will not avail himself of this me picious time to make payment? There is nn time so easy of payment's when the cash is on hand, and when a debt is paid there is release trom the obligation, and an end to the principal aud interest. Interest is an eatifcg moth, and it is better now to make an effort to pay off the debt than to put it off to a subsequent time, as we know not what changes may come upon the country, or what adversity may befal ourselves. These remarks are respectfully addressed to all my patrons, and especially to those whu have owed me for a long time. N. D. GALLION. Brookville, Nov 23 1845 48-ly S. II. PARVIN Sc CO. Dr. Jarne: Dear Sir: I feel bound to the afflicted to give publicity to the extraordinary effects ofyourtaluable medicines. I have suffered for several years past with Liver Complaint, and the train of diseases which follow a complete prostration of the system so that it was with great difficulty that I could walk, and at times I was confined to my room. To add to my misery, a Scrofulous affection appeared in my throat, with Rheumatism in my arms, so that I could not raise my arm to my head. In the hottest weather my feet and hands would ache with the cold, and perspiration had almost ceased. I now became afflicted with a dry hoarse cough, and gave np all hopes of ever getting well. I had night sweats, and got little or no sleep, with frightful dreams and morbid headache. 1 seemed to be borderine- on INSANITY, and was denied all study or mental exer cise, i could not read a small paragraph in a newspa. per wiinout great oimcuity. i nad great soreness in my stomah, w hich caused it to swell so much that I was unable to lie down, or even to recline, but had to be propped up in a chair. I had the advice of some eminent physicians, and tried nearly all tne remedies used in such cases, but contin ued to grow worse, and it appeared as though a speedy dissolution was takinc place. I now heard of yonr medicines, and determined to try vnn. SIV1T1VV UTI I c 1 . . j ...... m o , .uu iu my surprise inr sore ness left me, so I could walk about the house. I con tinned to improve from that time. Shortly after my wife called at your Store, and stated mv case to you, and you sent me a bottle of your ALTERATIVE, and also word to come and see you, and you would investigate my ease, and cure me. This I did not believe, as 1 felt I was beyond the reach of human skill. After taking your A Iterative and Pills for three weeks . .. . oeeioeu cnange lor tne netter, so that when I called upon yon, you said that I would get well, and that your ALTERATIVE would run. .... .(r.....n,. With no hopes, however, of, etting well, I still continl .-..ii; ruur Alterative, nntu 1 had taken the fourth ooiiie, wnen there was a sudden change in my whole ssiriu,as inongn I had got nd of some great burthen, and I could draw my breath as usual. My nerves gradually became strong, and my appetite returned. It has been about four months since I commenced taking your Medicines, and at this time nearly every e..i(r oi uiseaae is eradicated Trom my system. I am na "early a .trong, as at any period of mv a. enow r'"ed nine pound in two months.
