Fire. A building belonging to Mr. Hutchinson, in this place, took fire just after daik, on Tuesday evening last, and was entir el y consumedloss about 350, apart of which loss was Mr. John Campbell's. The building was formeily occupied as a cooper shop, but it was finishing off for a dwelling house. The loss falls upon honest, industrious mecharies. Another Court House Burnt Two weeks ago we informed our readers of the burning of the Court House of Miami county, in this
State. This week we record the burning of
the Court House of Noble county, Ind., with
all the papers and records of the Clerk's of
fice, Recorder's office and Auditor's. It was destroyed on the 25th ult. Notwithstanding
the admonitions and warnings we are constantly receiving, our public records are in the same exposed position. We do hope our county commissioners will da something before it is too late. Burn up our public records and papers, and the losses and litigations, w ill continue to be felt for several generations to come. A fire proof building will cost but a small sum, and we hope the citizens of the county will make known their wishes to the commissioners.
FALSE SYMPATHY. The manner of electi oneering, and the cause assigned for supporting candidates, are often odd enough. The loss of a leg, or an arm, poverty, a wife and half a dozen children; these are great helps "Do vote says a friend, for this ticket; my friend has only one leg, he has a large family give him your vote, do." And all this said so earnestly, that good meaning citizens often comply; without making any further enquiries on the subject. But let them, or let any one, apply this principle to'private matters, Who employs a phy-

The same principle.therefore which impels usto to select lawyers, or doctors, or agents, ought to govern us in choosing our public officers; and he who acts upon any other, does not do his duty to himself or his country. Let us not be misunderstood. The power of sympathy we understand and value. Give it always free scope, whenever a worthy object presents itself; it is the real wealth of the heart, and we would never chill or repress it; but do not misdirect it by folly, or vent it on unworthy objects. To elect a man to office when he is not fit, through sympathy for the reasons assigned, or for any reason, is both foolish and wrong, and should not be done. Cin. Gaz.
