AMERICAN. BUOOKVILLE, INDIANA FRIDAY, APRIL T, 1843. " FOR PRESIDENT, HENRY CLAY, of Ky. WHIG NOMINATIONS. FOR GOVERNOR, SAMUEL BIGGER. LTEDTEN ANT GOVERNOR, JOHN II BRADLEY.

We call J attention to the notice of the meeting of the Franklin county Education Society, and the proceedings of the Executive committee. The meeting takes place at Blooming Grove, on the 20 instant. We again appeal

to the teachers of common schools in this couuty, and ask them if this is not an enterprise in which they are interested? If it is not likely to elevate their profession? If it does not promi se through their instrumentality, a great deal of good to the public? And finally, if they will not eo-operate? At all events, the Society will be sustained, and the people stirred up to reflect upon the subject of education, and the competency of teachers; and when they find a man hanging back from such an association, they will very properly conclude, either that he is afraid to exhibit his qualifications in public, or that he has no public spirit or desire for improvement, and in either case,

A loco foco county convention, was held in the Court House on Saturday last, at which were present rather more than "seven men and one boy." We saw nothing remarkable in the proceedings, but the half unanimous resolution to support Tom Smith for Congress with

out a convention. This more than shows some of their fears. They dread a convention because they fear they have not the strength

in the district. In this county they can afford to hold conventions, 'because they are confi

dent of their majority. Again, Judge Johnston

is beyond doubt the choice of the locos of this county. Yet, they so fear their weakness that they will not press his claims, lest they drive Smith's friends from them, and ensure a de-

feat, which under any circumstances would be

more than probable. Our friend Shoup made a speech on the occasion. We are much mistaken if he could not conduct a Congressional canvass to better purpose than such an ill looking ignoramus as Tom Smith.

Daniel St. John's term, as Justice of the Peace, ex pires in a few days, and the county Commissioners have ordered an election on the 22nd of this month, to fill the vacancy.

Millerism. We insert in the'paper a lengthy article by Wm. Miller, upon the 'subject of the

time of the end. It will do no harm to exam

ine these things, if they re true, they are of

that he is entirely unfit to teach their chil- j the greatest importance; and if they are false, dren. they should be discountenanced, as having a We have been requested to say to all who bad tendency. So many false doctrines have

DISTRICT CONVENTION. Owing to some misunderstanding this body

did not meet on Wednesday last. In some of the counties our friends have no press, and for that reason could not prepare as early as was proposed. It will not be known when the convention meets until some action is had in the counties of Ripley, Decatur and Switzerland. We hope our friends there will attend to this matter, fix a day and give us notice, and we think we can venture to say that the delegates from Franklin will hold themselves in readiness t attend. Some of our townships have as yet had no meetings. This delay will af

The Depth of Meanness. Some two weeks

ago a poor soul named Davis, to whom nature

had denied the faculties of hearing and speech

visited our town, and enlisted the sympathies of our citizens in his behalf, as he was not on

ly unfortunate, but extremely poor. Among

his other misfortunes, was that ofbeing a loco

foco; not that we think a man who can hea

and speak may not be fortunate as a democrat

for he may get some office, and perhaps if he

does not he msy be happy. Bvit one who has

not these gifts, is not only sure never to get an office, but is likely to be led into bad company, and to suffer therefrom, as the sequel

will show. While Davis was here he concluded to have a number of charts printed, giving some account of the method of educating deaf mutes, and showing the modern manual alphabet. For this purpose he visited a neighboring office, contracted for the priming, and furnished the most important part of the type himself. Now this poor wretch picked up a precarious living by selling these charts at a bit a piece. See how he was treated by these democratic, people loving editors and printers.

After they had printed the requisite num

ber of charts, they struck off the same mat

ter, with Davis' type, as the fourth rage of their paper; thus effectually cutting offhis sales 60 far as their paper was distributed. They received the stipulated price, and, as if to add insult to injury, sent their paper ont with a notice of what they had done, and requesting their subscribers to buy of poor Davis to buy
