attempt to head '-Captain" Tyler:
f'rtm the Jtadisonitm. HEAD HIM. BOTT9. HEAD HIM! I The following extraordinary letter was forwarded to us, late last evening, as having 3een w ritten by the author far the Coffee House at Richmond, where such delectable scrap? of new arc as public as at an exchange of a commercial city. Under any other ciromittances we should not have felt authorised to publish it. It will, no doubt, strike every friend of the Administration with equal astonUhnf&itl and regret. 1)kh Sir: The President has finally resolved to veto (he Bank bill. It will be sent in to day at VI o'clock. It U impossible to tell precisely on what ground it will be placed. He has turned, and twisted, and clianged his ground so often in his conversation?, that it is difficult to co njeclure which of ihe absurdities he will rest his veto upon. In the h3l conversation reported, hemic" his only objection was to that provision which presumed the anient of the Slates, when no opinion was expressed, and if that was struck out he would sign the bill. ITe had an objection to the location of branches by Directors, in the absence- of diss nt expressed, bat -whenever it was expressed, the power to discount promissory notes must cease, although the agency might continue, for the purchase and sale of foreign exchange. However, youj will see his message. Our Captain Tyler is making a desperate effort to set himself up with the loenfocos but ho'll be headed jet, and 1 regret to say, it will end badly for him. He will be an object of execration with both parties, with one for vetoing our bill, which was bad enough with the other for signing a wor.e oue; lut he is hardly entitled to sympathy. He has refused to li-te.i to the admonitions and entreaties of his bel friends, and looked only to the whisperings of ambitious an J designing mischief makers that have collected around him. The veto will be received without a word, laid on the table, and ordered to bo printed. To night we n.ust and will settle matters, as quietly as possible, bat they must be settled. Yours, &r, JOHN M. BOTTS. You'll get a bauk bill, I tkink, but one that
will serve only to fasten him, and to which no
stock will he subscribed; and when h finds
out that he is not wiser in banking than all the rest of the world, we may gvt a better.
the excitement here is tremendous, but it will be smothered for the present. The above letter is postmarked. 'Wash
ington, 16th August,' and addressed 'Coffee
House, luchmend.' Free. JOHN M. BOTTS.
mr. ptorriT. We suppose that we will have to give up this gentleman. He forbade the Reporter for the Intelligencer from Reporting his remarks on any occasion. The editors of the Globe, however, publish the following.which, we suppofe. correctly define the gentleman's position: In J. Juttr, "Mr. Profit said he believed the Whig party was not to be found in these balls; they were to be found at the plough handles and in the workshops. The Whig party succeeded by tlte addition of the old Jackson men. who wished to reform the abases of the Ad
ministration. He compared the vetoed bill.
which was concocted in the Senate to make
great men to make Presidents to a limp
ing animal that stalked up the aveuue with a leg of brass and a leg of wood, and finally
died with the Bolls. He said he belonged to the corporal's guard; and if the member from
uginia wonM permit him. he woulJ march as tl:e hnmblest member of the forlorn hope. He thought the President ought to have a
new cabinet; and if he was asked when, he
should y now. If they went out of their
own accord, so much the better. He went
agatnn Mr. Clay with sorrow, but he never
-could have Mr. Clay for his President. He
felt the chains upon his wrists now; he did
not fi-cl them when he advocated Mr. Clay's cause before the people for thirteen long
y ears, tie sata me name or the hill would be changed before it was passed, and he
should not be surprised if it was called the
Sub Treasury Bill.
-Mr. P.ffit defended Mr. Tyler with elo-
ouence, ana to me tallest extent."
OFFICIAL INTKJIPERKKCE WITH KLHC-
TIONS. It appears, iy the annexed order of Presl.
dent Tyler to the Post Master General, that
he is determined to prevent the officers of the
Geiieral Government from interfering with
elections:
TO TUB ll?l. S. H. I10BBIK, .feting PoHmaster General. . Sir: -1 formation having been received
in a form entitled to attention, that the Poet
Maters at Pennsylvania, ant
, Ohio, have so far violated the ob-
ligations which they impliedly assumed on taking office under my Administration, cfah-
staining from any active paitisanship, or in
an) way connecting their ofners with party politics, or 'uing them for partv purposes, 1
have to request that inquiries shall be instantly instituted into their conduct, and that, if the charges against them be found to be true,
I hey be immediately turned outof nice, and
citizens appointed in their places who will
otherwise conduct themselves. The Post
Office Dcpartment.in all itsoperalionshould be conducted for tlte single purpose rf ac
complishing the important objects for which
it was established. It should in an especial mannei,so far as it practicable, be disconnected from party politics. It was established
for specibed purposes ol equal importance to
evey citixeo. I o convert it into an engine of parly, to be used for party purposes, is to
make it the trmliul source ol tke most alarm
ing evils. Ramified M itis.and extended to
every neighborhood, the parity of its adminis
tration, ana necessnruy oi us aems, snouia be pirucularly guarded. For a Deputy Postmaster to use his franking privilege (a privilege bi slowed upon him for the sole
purpose ot exonerating him from oppressive
chaiges hi the necessary correspondence ol
his office) in scattering over the country pamphlets, newspapers, and proceeding; to influ
ence elections, is to outrage all propriety ,and
must not for a day be tolerated. Let this be
left to the politicians. I shall be happy if:
one or (wo examples shall be found sufficient to correct an bih tot to f x'vtwlvelj prevailed. I will take this occasion, alsorts add,- for your instruction, that the appointment to,and continuance in the office f Post master of any one editing a potiticar newspaper is in the highesc degree objectionable. It involves most of the Consequences above statedintroduces politics into the post office demolishes the revenueand confer privileges en one editor which all cannot enjoy. In a word, it is my fixed purpose, as far as in me lies, to separate the Post Office Department from politics, and bring about that reform which the country has re loudly demanded. JOUN TYLER. September 33,1841.
TOUBLES en TUB NORTHERN FRONTIER
The transaction at Alburgh, Vermont, no
ticed in our paper of yesterday, is confirmed. It has produced an immense excitement' in the vicinity of the outrage. The circumstan
ces as given are these: James Crogan, who
formerly resided in Canada, M i natural born citizen of the United States, while returning from Michigan to Alburgh, was cap
tured by a detachment of British-dragoons.
underCaptaiu Jones. Crogan was steeping

surrounded the house, forced it open,-ad entered Crogau's bedroom, who defended him
self against his assaillants until severely
wounded in the legs and thighs by bayonets.
Uis face was literally flayed, and his clothes
torn off. He was wrapped in a bofialo robe,
thrown into a wagon, carried across the line and sent to Montreal in irons. When this
affair became known at St. Atbans, a public
meeting was held, and- a committee was ap

LATE FOREIGN NEWS. The Great Western Steamship has arrived at New York bringing late, though not very interesting, intelligence from England. - On the subject of the McLeod case nothing further has transpired. Lord Paluterston, in reply to a question put to him in the House of Lortts, said that "nothing could be more honorable than the conduct of the American Government in this matter." Parliament was opened on the 24th Aug. Her Majesty's speech was read by the Lord Chaucellor. It says that her Government continues to receive assurances of peace from foreign pow
ers, that ihe objects for which the treaty of
tmjuiy was concluded between Ihe nve powers have been fully accomplished, that affairs in Persia are settled, but, that negotiations between her plenipotentiaries in China and the Chinese government have not yet been brought to a satisfactory conclusion; it direct the attention of Parliament to matters affecting the welfare of Canada, relies upon its loyalty and zeal lo make adequate provisions for the public service; and concludes by saying that the extraordinary expenses which the events in Canada, China, and the Mediterranean have occasioned, and the uecessity of maintaining a force adequate lo the protection of our extensive possessions, have made it ueressary lo consider the mensof increasing the public revenues.
