From the Indian Journal Feb. 3. In the House the subject of classification continues to occupy much of the time and attention of this hdr. On Monday morning, Mr. Newell of W. introduced a bill toclassify the public works, to which several amendments were i ffered and discussed nn considerabla length. The leading provisions of Mr ?sev, ell bill were the following: That Ihe hite' Water Canal from Brook ville to the first feeder dam below Cortncrsville, and th Railroad from Vernon to Edinburgh shall constitute the first class. All other work are placed in the second class. The sum of three

minareu thousand dollar of the suspended j

pended debt to be applied to the payment of

interest on tne Matt debt, or to the payment of contractors on the works, and no other works than those above mentioned are to be prosecuted until ordered by future Legislature. Mr. Conner offered an amendment to Mr. Newell' bill, the principal object of which was to place the White Water Canal and the New Albany and Vincennes Road in the fir.t class, and all other in the sevond class. Mr. Champer moved to recommit the bill and amendment to a select committee

with instructions to place the southern er.dof the Central Canal and Cross Cut Cannl in the first class, and all others in the second clas. The 1 louse refugee to'commit the bill.

On motion ofMr. Clark of T.. the New Al-

Jones, Esq. of EvansviHe was elected. On Wednesday morning the bill of the Senate to suspend the works, and the amendment of Mr Dunn wns again taken up and committed to 'a select committee, and the whole forenoon spent in motions to instruct

the committee, without agreeing upon any of

the instructions whuh were offered. The commUtee will probably report back Mr. Dunn' amendment without any material alteration, and from present indications, it will be passed by a respectable majority.

From the Indian Journal Feb. 9. In the Senate all the important matters sent up to it from the House have been acted npon. The amendments by this body to the bill suspending the public woiks are noticed below. Nothing of importance now remains for the Senate to act upon but the revenue bill. In the House, on Friday, the select commit, tee to which the bill of the Senate providing for the suspension of the public works was referred, reported back with nn emendment by .striking out the bill and inserting the amendment offered on Thursday by Mr Dunn. Other amendments were proposed to the bill as reported by the committee, and Ihe course taken by the opponents of the bill on the previous day, ts) prevent the final action of the House upon it, was about to be renewed when Mr Blair called the previous Question, and the House decided that the main question should be now put ayes 54, noes 39.
