THE RESULT. The question is new decided, and we may ask ourselves what we have gained by the election of Gen. Harrison ? We have gained much, if we profit by the experience of the pastas we may. We have been in the habit
of attributing every thing to the popularity of Gen. Jackson. We hate been accustomed to hear it said that this public man was defeated because be was opposed to General Jackson, and that that public measure has been carried because it was approved by Gen Jackson. . There are many, very many, who are com
mitting the same error in relation to General !
Harrison, that gave so much power to Gen. 1 Jackson. The latter was spoiled by flattery. He was told that he could do any thing, and in the pride of power, lie was impelled to make his own will the guide of hi public ac- . lions. He substituted the caprice of a despot for the principles of the constitution, and played the tyrant in the name of liberty.
But he could not have practised so long
had it not been that the opposition to his

history of the past twelve years will be read

fear that it will encourage the leaders to keep up the present party organization. We reason differently. The result of the election demonstrates that Mr. Van Huron's measures were unpopular. Many who would have supported his ptrly opposed his measures and chiefly because they foresaw that his re-election would keep alive the conflict, and destroy the confi
dence of the public in the fiscal condition of
the country. Mr. Van Burcn was pledged
to a theory, and that theory was opposed by
so large a body of the people who believed that his re-election could not have restored
cither public or private confidence. General Harrison is pledged to no theory or finance.
He is not even pledged to support a change of the present system. He is pledged to leave
that measure to the action of Congress, and it follows that he will not bring hs uiflueiice to beir, as Mr. Van Buren has done, to support any measure in Congress, or It uphold or to
oppose men because they may be lor or a

to execute the laws; and it will be his interest, and we are sure it will be his pleasure, as far as practicable, to hca! the divisions crea

of the people, and not the head of a faction.
As to his appointments and removals from
