pecting that all was not right, caused a num

ber of the colhns to be uneaithed, and found

lethargy. Her husband was willing, good

man. to believe her out of pain; nnd so, ntcor

thorns pierced the sheet, and waked the wo

man from her trance. Some Years after, she

died in reality; and, as the funeral passed a

erroneous one. those who have often witnessed tha act of dying allow that it is not a

painful process. In some delicate and trrilable persons, a kind nf struggle i indeed some

times excited when respiration becomes diffi

tult; but more frequently the dying obviously

sutler nothing, and express ho uneasiness.

Those who die of chronic diseases the grnda tion is slow and distinct. Consumptive pa

tients are sometimes in a dxing state for sev

era! days; they appear at such times to suffer

little, but languish for complete desolutiou

commencement of insensibility by the cries o

their frinds, or the effort of the attendant to

alleviale pain. In observing persons in this

situation, we have always been impressed

with an idea, that the approach of natural

death produces a sensation similar to that of falling asleep. The disturbance of respiration is the only apparent source of uneasiness to the dying, and sensibility seem to he im

paired, jut in proportion lo the dccren.e of

that function. Besides, both the imnressions

of present objects and those recalled bv mem
