ft-For the last few days the editor's health has evinced a change Tor the better, though he ia till confined to his bed. On Wednesday night it commenced raining.
and has continued until now, with the prospect of
continuing still longer.
The River. The Pittsburg Advocate of
Friday last, says: "That the rains of the last few dys have not been without effect upon the river. Yesterday, at 5 o'clock, P. M.,it had risen a few inches, and was swelling iteauily when we left the wharf.' The Wheeling Times of Saturday says: "After some little rain, and a slight rise in the river, we have cold. nd wintry weather. There was a slight fall of snow hist night; and we understand it had fallen on the mountains in Urge quantities." At this point the river is not thus far changed, unless it be still getting lower. We understand that, in order to complete the navigation from here to Louisville, not less than four steamboats are employed running on different parts of the line. Cin. IThig The Rives. The Pittsburgher of the Cth ys: MIt rained almost the whole of yesterday quite heavily, in the evening, and from ell appearance we have stiong reason to hope that there will shortly be a rise in the rivers, an event looked for with much anxiety by the manufacturers and merchants."
Anticipated Blockade of Cantos. Amoug 'he most important political news brought by the Western is the information given by a Bristol paper of the intention of the British Government to send a squadrou to Canton wilh a view of blockading. This is laid to be owing to the opium heretofore seii cJ on board the British ships in that port and destroyed. Payment will be demanded for the opium, and, it is said, blockade take place ia case of positive rt fus il. This looks like forcing the Emperor to swallow opium, whether he will ro no. Cin. Ifhig. Boud.vr? Troubles. The last St. I.ouis CuIIetin has information from a gentleman just arrived from Burlington, that great excitement prevails in the neighborhood of the disputed Territory, and that Gov. Lucas had dispatched a messenger to Dubuque for the United States Marshall. Citu Whig. Some of the inmates of the latter had not been found at a late hour in the evening. Before the explosion, a dense column of (lame was rising from the mouth of the pit, from 70 to 100 feet high. At 10 o'clock, a despatch arrived at Pictou

Harlem, N Y, June 2d, 1839. To Dr Wm Evans Dear Sir I have been af.
flicted during the spring and fall of the last three years, with the Fever and Ague; the doctors who attended me. called it the tertian kind; it returned every other day. All my friends supposed that
there was no hope for my recovery; I always felt
languid anu leeoie; my tace and Jimbs became pale nd emaciated; my biealhing was short and anxious, with a constant pain in my right Bide; the fit generally continued eight or ten hours, during
wnicn ume mere was o.ten an acute pain in the head; sometimes slight delirium. I was told by a friend (who had likewise happily experienced the
salutary effects of Dr Evans Fever and Ague
Pills) that they had cured htm and was likelv to
prove beneficial to me. I sent for them. And glad I am to assert, that I never had a return of the ague after using a few packages of them; they are an invaluable remedy for that distressing complaint, and I ardently hope that the public will soon become fully acquainted with their virtaes.

duces troublesome and dangerota symptom. It is known by mothers that there is a great irritation in the mouth and gums daring the process. Tbe gums swell, the secretion and th ah
the child is seized with frequent and sudden tits of
") ,. artmg in its sleep, and spasms or peculiar parts; the child shrieks with extreme Violence, and thrusts its fingers into its mouth. If these precursatory symptoms sre not speedily alleviated, spasmodic convulsions universally supervene, and soon cause the dessolution of the infant. Mothers who have their babes afflicted with these distressing symptoms should spply Dr. Wm. Evans celebrated Soothing Syrup, which has presetved hundreds of infants when thought past recovery, from being suddenly attacted with that fa-
iai maiaay, convulsions. - - Directions. Please shake the Dottle when first opened. When children begin to be in paib with their teeth shooting in their gums, put a little of the 8ynip in a teaspoon, and with the finger let the cbilds gums be rubbed for two or three minutes hrce times a day. It must not be put to the breast immediately, for the milk would take the Syrup off too soon. When the teeth are just coming through their gums, mothers should immediately apply the Syrup; it will prevent their children having a fear, and undergoing the painful operation of lancing the gums, which always makes the next toolh much harder to come through, and sometimes causes death. , " Trice one dollar prr bottle. "A gentleman who his made the trial of Dr. W. Evans Soothing Syrup in his family, fin caae ot a

JV. Y. Sun. We believe it is generally acknowledged by those whohave tried it that the soothing syrup for children cutting their teeth, advertised in another column, is a highly usesful article for the purpose for which it is intended. Highly respectable per sons, at any rate, who have made use of it, do not hesitate toTgive its virtues the sanction of their

the JJIooil bas hitherto been considered by Kai

tent themselves wilh the simple possession of this
fallacious opinion, without enquiring into the pri
mary sources from whence life, health, and vigor
emanate, and, etce eerta. pain, sickness, disease
and death. Not so with Dr. Hunt, whose exten
sive tesearch and practical experience so eminent
ly qualify him for the profession of which he has been one of the most useful members. He contends
and a moment's reflection will convince anv rea
soning mind of the correctness of his views that
the stomach, liver, and the associated organs are
the primary and great regulators or health, and that the blood in very many instances is dependent on
these organs, and that unless medicine reaches the
rool of the ttoeate, the tuperjicial anodynes usually
prescribed, 6erve but as foils to cover the ravages of deep rooted maladies. Under these convictions,
at the exnense of years ot close application, the
