A Sad Pictcoe of Mexico. Santa Anna Private letters fiom Mexico, state that Kaiita Anna, although apparently at Lis ease in the country had by no means abandoned his ambitious views. He was endeavoring lo foment disaffection, to injure the popularity of Buslamente, to produce another domestic revolution, and thus once more ride into power. 1 hese letters, it is but fair to stale, are from individuals avowedly hostile to the "hero of Tampieo." His friends still dest ribc him a a patriot, as anxious only for the permanent welfare of Mexico, and they point with triumph to his address to his countrymen after the battle of Vary Cruz, and when he supposed himself on :i bed of do ith. 'i he New Orleans Louisinnianofa late date, contains some
......... ..urn riiu, aiu 10 tic I rom -the pen or a distinguished nnd unprejudiced gentleman, which possesses considerable interes'. The writer describes the highways i s greatly deteriorated, the private and public building mouldering in decay, the agricultural and pecuniary resources of the couutiy rapidly diminishing, the officers of the government more venal lhaa ever, nnd Hie number of robberies and assassinations rapidlv increasing. The deficit in Ihe public treasury tl.U year, is said to amount already to $ 15,000,000. The pro duct of the custom houses at Vera Cruz and Tampico, is reduced to 10 per cent. the balancs being mortgaged to old creditors ofthe nation. Several of the courts have been closed, for wnul of the neccsary funds to pay the Judges. Many of ihe cities are destituteof the means of lighting up the streets. The police c-flkeis nre either unpaid or nre compensated by their connivance with robbers. All schoo's.ilis added, are closed, except in a few of Ihe cheif towns, where private fouuda-j lions afford a miserable support to institutions that arc called colleges, where they teach the, ancient languages without books, the physical sciences without instruments, chemistry without laboratories, botany without plants, anatomy without dead bodies, medicine without living cases, and legislation without codes. This is a s.id picture and despite the endorsement of the Louisianian, is, we incline to the opinion, greally overcharged. Mexico is no doubt in a wretched condition in a national point of view, and cheifly because of the political factious with which the country has so long been lorn. But the view of this writer is entirely too extravagant.
