Commercial s j s: rTi .... i ne uncertainly that hung over the state of the English harvest, when the British Queen left England, is not entirely removed by the arrival ol the Liverpool. The weather had been extensively unfavorable, and it is not to be concealed that the tone of the advices is adverse to the expectation even of an average crop; but still there was room for hope. In Ireland, however, the question was considered settled. The crops there, of grain as well as of potatoes, were unquestionably w below the average. The weather had "vvu laiai to the potatoes. Cotton was a shade lower than at our former advices, and confidence was felt that it had not reached its minimum. Clark, and Payntcr& Slack, commission merchants, was much injured. The intense heat of the (lying cinders set fire lo the roofs ol the sorcs of George W. Richards S- Co. andol Richards y Bishm,on the west side of Front street. The upper stories of the former were burnt, the latter partially injured. Here the fire was checked in this direction, beyond the expectation of the spectators. Meanwhile the flames had extended to the Steamboat Hotel, on the South side of Chesnut street, al the corner of Water. Next door a cooper's shop was destroyed, and the office and baggage depot of the Camden and Am boy line was materially Injured. At Ihe southwest corner ol Water and Chesnut streets, the fire reached the clothing store of Enoch Alden; next the barber shop of William Gorgas, next, to Martin's tavern, No. 57 Front, and to the oerman commission house of Mcisgies Unkart, No. 59. These houses were wholly consumed. I The other stores in the same range, of J. B. Mcllvaine, Wm. P. Hanna, and C. Field & Son, were sliirhlly injured. The stores of James Curran, draper and tailor, and of Loomis and Shaw, dry goods dealers Nos. 7 a id 8 Cannon Place, Troy, were destroyed by fire cn Friday morning. . FireatFortI.ee, and loss cf Life. Mr. Lnetl's stable al Fort Lee, on the Hudson, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night, with two valuable horses, and a quantity of hay and grain. Mr. Ephraim Pomeroy, in the employ of Mr. Enctt, perished in the flames, and a colored boy, who also slept in the upper loft of the stable, barely escaped with his life. Pomeroy was a native of ihe slate of Maine, and about 37 years of age. We have only lime this morning, bifore going to press, to announce the occurrence of the most awful and ucsliuctive fire which ever occurred before in our uufortunate and ill-stancd city. Last night, about eight o'clock, when the wind was Mow ing almost a gale from the south east, the fire broke out in an old wooden building in the rear of the house on the south east corner of Dauphin and Conception streets, owned bv Mr. Pinto. ; The adjoining buildings, being all of wood, llic fire was soon communicated to them, and in a few minutes crossed Conception street. Here it had full sweep the buildings being very compact, and all of wood, and the wins sou.h-easl the fire swept over the 2 squares west of Conception, from Couti,on the south, to St. Francis, on the north, with unexampled and terrific rapidity. Proceeding west, it crossed St. Joachin street, then Jackson here it extended one square further north, to St. Michael street and then three solid squares abreast, all in one grand terrific flame, it swept onward to Claiborne street and crossed it, sweeping every thing to Franklin. Here, at about twe o'clock, the wind fortunately abated; and in consequence of w iui n,anu me mowing up ol several buildings on Ihe west side of Franklin street, the pro press of the devourinc element was staved.
