THE T1JIKS.
A NIGHT AT A COUNTRY 1M. ReaJer, didst thou ever travel for pleasure Halt thou, weary of a town life, ever statted with three trunks, two curpet bags, one hat case, and an umbrella, in search of comfort and enjoyment! If so, you can vouch for the fidelity of my picture of n .country inn. If j on hare nerer travelled but are anticipating a pleasant journey daring the coming summer, I bog you to W down the Literary Gazette, and take up that beautiful work entitled American Scenery.' I would not cast an unpleasant shadow brer thy pleasing hopes, or dim the gaudy Coloring of a picture so beautiful in perspective; I would not "Cloud the Sun Of joyua exportation." - Wearied with a long days journey, and
covered with dust, I alighted at the close of
the hottest day of the summer of 1838, at the North American Washington Hotel and Man ion house, in the village of , no matter what village it was there are a thousand uch villages; and a thousand such hotel; it has been my fortune to visit all of them. Hut to return to my subject: I alighted before the inn above mentioned with a sprained ancle and half dislocated shoulder blade injuries unhappily sustained on the fourth upsetting of the stage conch, and inquired for a cool and comfortable room, which I was too happy to hear would be in readiness for me in tire minutes or thereabouts. While my room was preparing, I amused myself with a cursory view of the bar room and'its appointments; coarse portraits of Washington, La Fayette, Genl. Jackson and Eclipse Colt, graced the fly covered walls a wooden clock ticked in ona corner, and a large Iron store, redolent with discarded tobacco and saliva, stood in the middle of the room, which was surrounded by a dozen of loungers earnestly discussing the'merits of the Sub-Treasury bill. An hour having elapsed since my arriving, it was intimated to me that my chamber was ready. I Immediately ordered my baggage
