AMERICA. .Sires of America, your deeds were well done. Your coarse on the earth was gloriously run; Oppression's strong arm you quellM with a stroke. And cast from your necks the ponderous yoke; United yon stood like a brotherly band, Protecting your children and own loved land
You gloried in that which was right 'neath the sun,
Sires of America, yonr deeds were well done.-
But hark! what is that which now bursts on my eart What is that which now brings commotion and fear!
Has the grim savage, rushed again from the wood. And spread devastation where our forefathers stood?
Or docs some foul fiend from the depths of despair i Send forth his dread arrows to blight all that's fair! Sons of America, your course has begun Sons of America, your deeds are ill done. Ah! where is the spirit that once was expressed, By those who beneath the valley's clods now rest? Shall justice herself fall a prey in the street, And must we a foe see, in all that we meet! Has the spirit of seventy-six all passed by, And shall we devour each other and die? No! Sons of America, this never should be, In the land of the brave, the home of the free. Awake, or thy foes will environ the round, And trample thy liberty low to the ground; Behold! what an influx comes in from the east, Who seek to establish the seat of the beast. Think how the glory of the Roman name fell, When the Goths, and Vandals, came in like a spell; Think too, how old Greece the mother of arts, Ingloriously fell pierced by her own darts . Sons of America! the kind warning take, O sons of my country, awake! awake! Brookville, Fcb'y 27th, 1839. THE VICTIM. ECSSIAX ADTEXTURE. Some vcars ago, business of importance cal
led ine to St. Petersburg, IJeinj unwilling to go alone, I succeeded in inducing friend Saville to accompany me. I mention him, poor fellow, as he formed a very prominent feature in the little adventure 1 am about to rela'e. I will pass over the incidents of ourjournej until we arrived at St- Petcrburg, when, having transacted my business, I, to favor Saville's wish determined to proceed to Jaroslav,
where he had relations. Instead, however of
going the direct route, he visited Kcrilo), a small town on the Scheksma, a branch of the Volga for the purpose of seeing a renowned
Hermit, who, we were told, was an English
man. This was inducement enough for us, circuitous as was the route wc went. Arriving late at night, we with considerable difficulty succeeded iu getting lodging.
w nicn tnouqn very mean and wretched, we at
last entered.
The landlord, a talkative man, told us, dur

ouicr tilings ne loia as that the neit morning the punishment of the knout was to be performed for there this horrid barbarity is considered quite a spectacle, to see which, people flock in from all parts. The culprit was a j-oung Jewess, remarkable for her beaut v, &
tue crime was the murder of her father. If
the knout did not end her existence the wheel
was in readiness to complete the scene of
blood. From the account it appeared that the whole circumstance was veiled in no slight obscurity, inasmuch as the only evidence against the poor girl was, that when questioned to where her missing father was, she shed floods of tears and was silent. This in Russia was enough to seal her fate. She was accordingly condemned, and was in prison when wc arrived here. Being much interested for the poor girl, we, (Saville and I) determined in o lir.
We went, and by the means of a handful of
silver, we succeeded in bribing the jailor to admit us. The prison was gloomy to a degree; and never did I see so lovely a creature as me! oar eyee. She seemed scarcely above twenty, if so mueh. She like most of her race, was dark, with intensely bright eyes, which even her misery could not quench. She spoke to us m French, and in piteous accents protested her innocence. Her story was soon told. Beloved by a Russian Protestant, her heart would not obey the stem commands of that lather with whose murder she was charged, her father reviled her and there she stopped

Saville, hasty in every thing, determined to attempt to save her. Hun-Tine off. he hasten-

Dr. Burnhatn's DROPS, or Medicine, for Fever. AS an anti-billious and anti-dyspeptic Medicine, the Drops are unrivalled, where they are known, by any thing yet recommended. Persons who
have suffered for years with pain in the 6ide breast stomach or lungs and when, lo all appearances, disease had made extensive ravages, and seemed to be beyond the control of medicine, ' have been in all cases of trial greatly benefitted; and in a large majority of instances entirely relieved as the cases of Mrs. Hunter of Lancaster, Mis Burwell of Columbus, and Miss Tiffany of Madison, abundantly testify and many others not here enumerated, who have been relieved from the sufferings of periodical sick, or nervous head-ache, billious and cramp cholic. These facts in connection with the ease, and the safety of its administration, render it indeed an interesting and desirable remedy to every afflicted perecn. It is given in a littl cold wattr, and this agreeable beverage may be drank during its adm ..-stration, in all case except eruptive fevers, such as scarlet fever, measles, small pox, S c., in which cases warm drinks are only admissible. The dose being small renders it a very convenient medicine for children and infants; and it operates kindly and promptly iu those diseases of a billious character, such as cholic, summer complaint, fits, Sc., which either ruin lb constitution at this early period of existence, or otherwise terminate in the death of a vast proportion

Mr. W. U. Moffat Dear Sir: As a remarkable instance of the virtue and efficacy of your Life Pills and Phmnix Bitters, in rcstorii.g lust health to the afflicted, has occurred iu my family, I deem it a duty I owe both to yourself and the public, to make the fact known, that others suffering under similar circumstances might perchance see this, and obtain
a remedy in season to preserve them from a prcma-1 ture grave. My wife Las been aCicted with the liver complaint and general debility for upwards of three years; and for the last three months she has not been able to walk across the room. After trying various medicines prescribed by various physicians, which gave her no relief, she was given up as incurable. In this situation she was gradually failing, when I happened to call upon your agent in this village, and he gave tue a copy of the Good Samaritan, the perusing of which induced mc to try your medicine, although I had bet little hope of her receiving any benefit from it. Tbe effect was surprising. Before she had taken one bottle of bitters and one box of pills, she was so far recovered as to be able to accomplish most of her house work without assistance. Yonr. respectfully.
