John Law, has been appointed .Receiver of Public Moneys at Vincennes, in place of Jas. P. Drake, whose commission expire on the 30th of June 1838. Post Office has been established on Pipe Creek tt the town of Franklin, called "Jennings P. O." William Ally. Post Master. The Frankfort Argus, the only Van Buren paper at the capital of Kentucky has been discontinued for want of patronage. An Earthquake. On Saturday morning, the 9th inst. several shocks of an Earthquake were felt at Louisville. New Albany, Vincennea and Terre Hmte. The Iron and Liverpool ware on the helves of tbe merchants rattled together so as to be jnetlv beard. It was also slightly . felt at Cin-

At the time, Mr, King, his wife and S children were sitting at the table but the wife tad 2 children were not injured. And on 11th inst. the Brighton House, at the foiks of the Road this aide of Cincinnati, was track by lightning, but not materially injured. Tbe Coronation of Queen Victoria takes place
New York, June 10. People have been thronging the Battcrv to-day to 9ec Great Western, for they expect her here with as much regularity ns a Sound oraRirer steamboat. They forget it isa long ferry 3,000 miles and the ferry-boat has Brooklyn"4 paSSing lheEast river to Three or four more persons concerned in the piracy on board the steamboat Sir Robert cel hwe been sent to jail. The British have sent an armed vessel to cruise upon the Lake.
The Montreal Herald has begun an attack upon the Council of the Earl of Durham. It is not very probable that nobleman can do much' to pacify the discontent in Lower Canada. He has two English parties. Whig and Tory, to please, and then the French party in addition. Hif mission in all probability will be fruitless. By an arrival to-day from Rio Janeiro, we have dates to the 30lh of April. I see no news of interest to us. The weather here is now blazing hot. We have cucumbers, green peas, strawberries, and the like. JVat. Int.

Grand and Petit Jnrort. By the law of the lut Lfgislatvre Grand an Petit Jurors receive one eoBirand tweaty-fivs cents per day. This law
wu in force from and after its passage, which was
approved on the 17th day of Feb. 1838- Since
that time the Circuit Court of this county has held
a Session, and at the April Term of the Board of
County Commissioners, the Grand and Petit Ju
rors were allowed only 75 per day, thereby depri aiag every Juror who served a week of three dol
tare. Bat according to our reading of law, and oar conceptions of Justice, they can yet obtain the
balance. Neither Court or criminal
igaorasca of the law, "because every man, is, in the judgement of the law, party to the making of the act, being present thereat by his Representatives." In a Representative Government a Statue or act, is placed in the Records of tbe Government, aeading no formal promulgation to give it tbe force of law, as was necessary by the civil law relative to edicts of Emperors, c. This is s doctrine dearly laid down by Blackstone and SUrkie- It is very correctly said in tbe Books, that "Ignorance of the law, excuses so man, not that all men know
t law, bat because it is an excuse every man will
nsie, and no man can tell how to confute him."

FROM THE CHEROKEE COUNTRY. Wei earn, through the medium of aulhcn
uce publications in the Georgia Recorder of
uie otn inst, that Major UeneraM Scott pro
ceeded to carry into effect his orders to oblige the Cherokees, after the 23d ultimo, to evac
uate the territory heretofore held by them within the limits of the State of Georgia. His
measures met with no resistance. On the
29th, he had under his control three thousand
Indians; and, before this time, it is supposed that not a wandering Indian remains within the territory of Georgia. The manner in
whjch this duty has been discharged by that distinguished General is prised for its kindness, humanity, and freedom from violence. This information is gratifying; for surely there is enough to appeal to the public sympathy in the destiny of these original lords of the soil, with, out adding to it unnecessary violence.
We reioice, for the sake of our lellow-ci li
kens of Georgia as well as for that of the In
dians, that, so far, all goes on as it does, with as little difficulty as could possibly , have been
hoped. The Georgians themselves appear to
be sincerely gratified that it has so turned out; and the friends o( the Indians, who'cannot enter into all the feelings of the Georgi
ans and other Southerners on the subject, will
yet not less rejoice than they, that the policy of the Government does not end in blood. JVat. Int.
