Revision of the Laws. During our late visit to the scat of Government of this State, we obtained some knowledge of the manner of doing business where they "dispense the laws and customs" to the State. But we will confine this notice particularly to the revision of the Laws. Those who voted for this measure, contended that the judges, who had to decide the law, were not the right men to revise it. We will see how far they have kept the Legislative and Judicial department of the State separate. After they had decided to take it out of the hands of the judge?, and the revising
committee were appointed, they found they would
have to c ill on foreign tiid to assist them. We stated some two weeks since that the committee hired clerks to transcribe the laws after they were drawn up. Rut this was a mistake. The Committee engaged W. W. Wick, Est. President Judge of the 5th Judicial Circuit of Indiana; E. M. Huntington, President Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit; Major Thornton of New Albuny, Gen. Kin gore, of the Hazel thickets, and Iohn Yantrees of Washington City, and some others we believe, at from 4 to G dollarg per day to draft and revise the laws of this State, report the same to the revising Committee, and that comrniUee have the laborious task of reporting to the Legislature. These are as near the facts of the case as we coul.l learn. The Slate would have giincd to have given the

dent that the Legislative department of the Government of Indiana costs double the amount that it should. Formerly 100 copies of the Governor's
Message was sufficient for the v.ie of the House of
Representatives, now it takes 5,000, Formerly they had about asmany copies of bills printed as there weremembers to use them, now they have ten times as many. Formerly member of the Lcrishture could pay for their own newspapers,
now the State pays for 20 per week for each member. Formerly there wero from 50 to 100 copies of the Reports of the different departments, of the
government printed, now 3,000 is the common practice. We must acknowledge that this is clover for the printers at the seat of government, but if they cannot live without sucking the life-blood of our citizens, "let them Ftarve." These arc trifling matters, and may appear unworthy J.hc notice of a great mind. But we are watchman of the public weal, and when we see their "interests and rights invaded, we are traitors
to our trusts, if we sleep at our post, no matter how slight the invasion, or how obscure the intru
der. As email cralt should Kcp near me snore, we esteem it our province to attend to matters of minor importance, while abler pens and mightier minds attend to things of greater moment. How others iol We see that Mr. Ilutchen, A;tnr nf the Inuiar.ian, accuses two of the mem
bers of Clark county of violating the will of their constituents in voting against the Democrat establishment as printer to the 7ouse of Representatives. He contends that inasmuch as there is a majority in thai county for Van Buren, the Representatives from that county should have voted for a Van Buren printer. Let us apply the same doctrine to Franklin county. Mr. Osborn voted for the Democrat, contrary to the wishes of a mijor-
itv of this county, the editor oi the indicnian thinks the citizens of Clark county will correct the matter at the ba'.Iott box. We are sorry to see car opponents setting such examples. Suicide. which neither the people can understand, nor t!
judges decide. The Supreme Judges had matured
and arranged the subject, and as we learn from good authority, would, by the 1st cf February, have finished and reported the laws to the Legislature. Of course thev will have to hp nnlH for
the labor they have performed, probably as much
as if they had finished. The period has now pas
sed when they would have reported, and the Legislature has ecareeiy commenced the revision One week's Legislation costs more than the Judges would have charged for the revision. Our Supreme Court id an honor to the State, and would have produced a code worthy of the character of Indiana. Neither would it have infri-ured unon
- -- O t 1 their duties as Judges there is no impropriety in the frainer of a law'being its expounder on the contrary, there is none better able to understand its truojntent and meaning. But probably our readers would like to know
who Las thus been instrumental in squandering our revenue, and disgracing our State, for the purpose of detaining the Legislature some two or
three months, in order that they may get $3 per diem. When we were at Indianapolis, we obtained the vote in the House of Representatives,
which we give below. We ask our readers to peruse that list careful 13-. Reader, do you see in tht list of affirmatives, the name of one man capableof revising a""code of laws! Is there one among fthem of Legal attainments of practical knowledge or of business babits. On the contrary, do you not see a list of ignorant drones ofi'rce-
seeking demagogues and miserly leeches. There may be some who votedin the affirmative, who arc correct and honest citizens and neighbors, but
they have no business in the legislature. In thus
denouncing them, we do not wish to detract from
their character as private individuals. There are some among them whom we esteem as our bust
and warmest friends, and we have no doubt they
acted honestly in the matter, but as we always
wish our friends well, we should hereafter be pleas
ed to see them in a situation better suited to their
talents and habits
On motion ofMr. Gregory to go into the revision
of the laws, the ayes and noes being requested
thereon by Messrs. Crume and Walpole; Those who voted in the affirmative were Messrs
