in selecting iheir amusements. They should choose tho?o tbnt poscss 'he least liability to iead to excess and ruin if possible, they should select those which both please and instruct.

Pleasure, or wring or rightly understood, Ojr gre.tert evil, or our greatest good." O . pun. i.'rg is often resorted to bv lh.? voting, lor amusement. Altlio-igh the act of card pining for recreation when considered simpl in and of ilscif, is not injurious, vet a its associations ami tendeiu ies are dangerous, and as it occupies hours that might be spent more profitably, the practice should be av.ided. There is nothing in thisamusement that canbobeneiui.il. It affords no useful exercise for the mind stores it with no valuable ideas not even admitting of conversation to anyiextent upon the ti iva! subject ofthe game. It is one ofthe most unmeaning, unprofitable, and fruitless employment f to w hich the mind ran w t il be directed, llut the great objection to card phuing, is its dangerous tendency. An t xperlness in this practice, is liable to induce a desire to venture a small hazard at the gaming table, and then a larger and larger etill. until a third for gaming is acquired, winch loads to poverty and wretchedness. 1 would I here fere advise voting men to avoid tat J phning entirely. It cannot possibly bestow any bent ft opon them; but it can "lead them iato the most sinful practices; it ran lead and has led to the dungeon and the gallows! Who is witling to run this hazard, for the sake f the little amusement this practice can impart. "Dancing, for these whose occupations nre of a se ientarv iharactt r, such as students and

many t lasses of mechanics, would bean ap

propriate exercise, it it were not perpetuallv

abused. But by assembling in large crowds,

urging young men (if, indeed, it is nccessaiy

to urge them) to frequent, in their leisure hours, the company of intelligent and virtuous females of the class w ith whom lliey associate. Nothing tends more to polish a young

man, and to refine his tastes and his manncis, than the society cf the virtuous of the other sex. In such company, vulgarity and profanity will be rebuked, and a guard will be placed upon the lip and the actions, that can not hut exercise a salutary tendency. In conclusion, I would repeat that, in regard to amusements, much depends upon the dis

cretion, the self-control and good sense of

young men. lou desire to be respectable.

prosperous, and happy. Iut bear this truth in mind, that you can net become so, except by your ow n exertions, your own forbcs.rance and discretion. Your interests Mid enjoy

ments are vitally involved in the character of

your amusements. Deeply fix the resolution in your mind, to indulge in no recreation that is not of an innocent nature, .and of a strict moral tendency, and jou w ill exhibit a w isdom productive of immense benefit.
