States schooner Sam Patch, the pleasure boat Chi'de Ilaro'J, a fishing sloop, and numerous oyster boats, went to the bottom, and it is supposed, that many persons belonging to the oyster boats perished. On the other side of the lake, the saheoners Betsey and Two Friends were lost. The light house at the mouth of Bayou St. John was swept away. The effects of the gaie at P01 1 Pontchartrain, situated at the termination of the rail toad from New Orleans were dreadful. The damage sustained by the railroad company was not less than $103,000. Great anxiety was felt for the receipt of intelligence from the Balize, and indeed from
io whole of the southern Atlantic coast.
Many wrecks and the loss of several lives had
Iready been heard of, and news still more-
disastrous was anticipated.
Hie steamer John L.inton. whiou arrived
in New Orleans on the tenth, gave information of the entire prostration of the crons on
both sides of the Mississippi. The Bulletin
of the eleventh says "Every arrival tells of
a pain tut destruction ollhecreps. The sugar cane and cotton stalks have been mowed down
far and wide more particularly in our own
state. An immense loss will be sustained bv
the planters on their sugar crops. " It appears

From Me Baltimore "Counterfeit Df lector.'' The grkvt Bank fouc.uu cavhiit. Our
readers will recollect that some time tince a check was presented atone of the Ch-.irlesloti

tirm of that place, and cashed, and which ifterwards proved to be a forgery. Before
the discovery was made the illian had suui-
cient start ol his pursuers as to leave no tract s of bis whereabouts. Five Thousand Dollars
were offered for his apprehension. The police of all the Atlantic cilie have been on the
look out for this Noble Prize" ever since.
Through the unremitting persevctance and
uncommon exertions of high Constable Jackson, of this city, he was arrested on Saturday, and is now at the General Depot up Jone's Falls. $10,000 of the money wns found on his person. Mr. Jackson deserve all praise; and will receive what we deem more substantial the 5000.

of wood what will all honest farmers say to this? He also said, that fora single trip of a
steamboat on the river Apahuhicola.thc owner had received a sum equal to the whole cost of the boat and what will Mr. Grundy say to that? J He further said, from what he had heard he was satisfied that.the public money had, in many instances, been worse than thrown avray. Mr. Bond also said that he was informed that in a certain instance $20,000 had been drawn by a certain individual, professinc to
uu .i captain oi volunteers, who had presented all the necessary papers when in fact ha bad
only -1 or 5 men.
Mr. Bond also said that $SO,000 had been granted on the mere request of the Chairman
of the Committee of Ways and Means and soon after the same committee asked for one
million, and since wanted one a half millions more. No wonder this Florida war costs so much, when we pay one hundred and seventy-five dollars for a cord of wood, and thice thousand thrco hundred and thirty-three dollars a piece for a captain and five men in Buckram.
