From the JVe-to York Era. WAYS AM) MEANS. A passengei in one of the steamers on the Ohio, on arriving at Louisville, pretended te had not suflicient money to pay his fare. He appeared honest, but "that the captain might be sure that he would come right hack nnd pay the bill,"' he told him he would leave his coaf. He departed with the remainder of his baggage, and notleng was heard of him until the boat was just about leaving. He managed to watch the operations for her departure and as the boat was about casting off, he rushed to the wharf, nnd cried out for his coal, (which hung up in sight.) at the same time showing the money. He placed the bills loosely in an old wallet, and told one of the hands to toss him the coat, nnd he would throw the money cn hoard. The coat was thrown upon the tjeck, and the loafer threw the tcatht on board, but the bills fell into the river. The rogue jumped into a skiff, pushed off and got the money, expressing his regret that it had fallen into the river. He was soon among the missing.
"Here conies the distress Moil,' said a little boy, as an express rider came galloping up Market street. We were struck w ith the appropriateness of the title; for, indeed, it has been loaded w ith distress from nil quarters, ever since it was established. Scarcely has it arrived, until questions like the following are anxiously asked: "How many
