RAISING CUICKLWS. The following is a valuable article, and relates to a branch of rural economy, which deserves more attention than it has received in this country, further favors of a nature from the same hand are respectfully solicited. Mr. Fessejiks. 1 one of '0,,r 'ate papers I aw mentioned a successful way of raising- chickent. I have been in the habit of raising- them for otne years, and if you think favorably of the mode I have adopted, you can insert it in your valuable paper. . I keep mT hens warm under cover during the winter, and feed them on Brewers grains,' placed in an open box or tub, that they may eat when they please, occasionally giving them oats, corn, ,,) nvstfri she!! pounded tine, and plenty of wa ter by kep":nj them warm and well fed they begin laviag earlier in tha season. I prefer spring chickens, a they lay earlier than old hens and the old hens te set, as they make the best mothers. 1 take cars th eg? do not get chilled with cold, nd kesp them in a wana place in my house. AVhen thre or four hens want to set, I put rfroiii thirteea to fourteen eggs under each of them, according to siae th day of the month marked on each egj and sfer the ten has set a week or ten days I examine them by holding the egg to a crack or knot Lola in the board when the sun shines through and if I discover any rotten ones, I take thera away ar.d replace them with fresh ones, marked a before mentioned. uen the chicken are all hatched, I put two or three of the broods to on hti, in a coop with an opening against an empty barrel placed on the bilge, and with a little care, when put in the coop, the hen maybe made to brood them at the further end sf the barrel. In that w ay tiie chickens mar, ara noi covered by tbahso huddle to jethr around her and keep each other warm. The hens from which the chickens are taken 1 put into an other coop, and in about a fortnoight thrv begin to lay again. The hen beinir confined in the coop, will leave her chcikens much earlier than if left to run at large with th;u, and the chickens will become so accustomed to going into the barrel and huddling together, as to be quite contented to give up the heVa brooding them! After the chickens are two or three weeks old I remove them with the coops into my garden, where they feed upon insects, so as to require but little food but do not keep them there until they are large enough to injure the garden. I feel persuaded that in the way I have proceeded, our market could be supplied with abundance of poultry, and I commend with confidence, if managed with care and attention, as profitable to those who may engage in such business. Omer Touscy, Esq. of this place, returned from the east a few days since, bringing with him between one and two hundred thousand dollars, mostly in gelJ and silver, fcr the use of the rail road from this place to Indianapolis. The woik is progressing in the hand of the present enterprising contractors; and we have not the slightest doubt that in three years, the entire line will be in complete operation. The company are in daily expectations of receiving oue hundred thousaNil dollars more from the fast the bonds aie in war- j -ket, and in all probability ha e been disposed ef ere thi-. Palladium. j Singular Death. The New York Coroner was called on Wednesday evening, to the house of Mr. William Boniitead, No. 51 Elddrige street, to view the body of the said Bomstead, who was 12 years of age, a native of West Chester county, and who, while attempting to swallow a large piece of meat verv imperfectly masticated, was sutlocated, and" perished in the attempt. Verdict accordingly. Small Dills. The following States have prohibited their banks from issuing any notes under live dollars: Mew York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersev, Alabama, Maryland. North Car olina, Kentucky, Tennessee and Maine. BicknclTs Reporter. Price of Pouk. We understand, the Pork Market has opened, in Cincinnati, within a day or two, at seven dollars per hund red. This is a full price for the growers of Fork. It is not probable, that there can be an advance upon it. Cin. Gaz. .Vor. it). Several young ladies "down east"' have been so affected by reading novels respecting ghosts, spectres and murders, that they are afraid 'o sleep alone!!! What a sad cat-a-itrophe! Diplomatic Brevity. Talleyrand addressed a letter of condolence to a lady who had lost her husband, in these words: "Oh! Madame!'' In less than a year the lady married again his billot of congratulation nin "Ah! Madame P Life Ixsukaxce. It is staled in the Army and Navy Chronicle that the late Col. lleileman insured his life to the amount of six thousand dollars in the Life Insurance office in Baltimore. By the judicious appropriation of a small annual sum, this gallant officer has thus been enabled to make provision to the amount staled, for his otherwise dependent widow and six children. There was a right smart fight in front of our office yesterday, between two calm pedlars. One was a little "how come you so,'" and the other as, 'blue as a whetstone.' The soberest one had to hold the other up to knock liim down. Spirit of the Times. "Why this is so short waisted;" said a wag the other day, as he tried on a new coat, "that I shall have to get into a chair .o put my hands in my pockets." Marriage. Never many but for love; but see thou lovest what is lovely. If love be not thy chief motive, thou wilt soon grow weary of a married slate, and stray from thy promise, to search out pleasure in forbidden placet. It is the difference between love and passion, that this ia fixed, that it is vola-
tile. They that marry for money cannot have true satisfaction of marriage, the requisite means being wanting. O how fordid man has grown! Man, the noblest creature in the world! As a god on earth, the image of Him who made us, thus to mistake earth for heaven, and worship gold for God. Mm. Pcnn.
Sick IIkaijache. A tea-spoonful of finely powdered charcoal, drank in a half tumbler of water, will in fifteen minutes give relict to the sick headache, when caused, as it generally is, by a superabundance of acid in the ston.ache. The Montreal Vindicator of the 1th, state, mat large purchases of Hour were made in that cit v that week for the American market, and further heavy orders have, it is said, been received from the States, for additional sup plies ot the same article. I he same paper complains ot a great scarcity oi potatoes in that citv. Legal Nonsexst. I do not liketo see a man sleeping in the barroom ot a tavern in daylight. I do not like to see idlers lolling on counters of stores, or in mechanics' shops, w hen the hands are at work. I do not like to see a man spend half of his time in the street, talking about politics, when he should be at his work. I do not like to see a man tlatter people to buy on credit, and then distress them to make payment. Whose writings would probably soonest lead us astray ? An. Sir John .-hcry's. The good book says pay u-hat thou oiccsl; punctuality says, pay u hat thou ozcest as it becomes due. Integrity honesty, and every thing essentially connected uith business, says pay Tt hat thou oicest and if speculation is the order of the day, first pay thy debts, and then speculate on the balance. CiOME weeks back, I informed my customers, 59 by public advertisement, that I was much pressed for money and requested payment, especially of those owing me previous to the present year. Uut few however, have complied with that request. I now ask payment of all who owe ine, and to those whose notes and accounts are of longer standing than the present year, I have to say that ihe next call will be from the officer. N I) GALLION.
