'reasons given by Mr. Gorostiza for taking his
leave, we think the following extract from a letter, just received, sheds some light on the
subject : Extract from a letter received in this city
from a gentleman who left Tampico on the l2th of September last. "The Mexican ports are now open to the Spanish flag, and the Government of Mexico
has despatched commissioners to Cuba, for the purpose of raising a naval armament to cruise against the Texians. Is it probable that men embarked in this warfare, would, or will return to port without prize money! The Texians have no commerce to gratify
their enemies with, and all their armed vess-
iels would not equal one decent prize.
Therefore it behooves the commerce of these seas to be well protected against piratical
movements. Several private letters from the
interior of Mexico were shown to me at 1ampico, from which the sentiment appears to be universal among the Mexicans, that war will

ter. Capt. (W.ton Gibbs) of Sandwich, and Geo. Hulscy, a black man, belonging to Hudson, were drowned. The cutter Alert, Captain Becker, wa fortunately near at the
time, and very promptly went to their assistance, and succeded in saving the remainder
of the crew. The cu'ter's crew are now (at 5 P. M.) employed in stripping the vessel of sails, rigging, &c. and will probably succeed in saving all that is above water before night. The steam boat Sun, Capt. Elijah Peck, was despatched by the Underwriters, at !2 P. M. yesterday, to give what assistance was necessary, and returned at G P. M. brought up the mate." A Grave above Ground. On the banks ol the Ohio river, between Mavsville and Wheeling, there is a cast iron coffin, supported by pillars, about two feet above the surface ol the earth, with the following inscription: "In memory of Andrew Ellison, who departed this life, January 12, 1821."
