0;i Wednesday, Alferd Gaines, of New Trenton,
was brought before the Cotirt on an indictment for
an assault with intent to murder, his infant child.
The principal ground upon which his attoraies re

of tUe act. He was very ably defended by JJUssrs.
Ktua, Joiinstox and Matson. The Jury re
turned a verdict, after a few minutes retirement, of not guilty, on the ground, we suppose, of his aberration of mind.

termined not to be revolutionized y the recreant "MiHt.'ecM" u-lio would dissolve the State Government for part' purposes. In the city of Ualtimere where the Van Ikirca party four weeks since received a majority of IG41 voles, can now only boast of a majority of 299 a falling off of more than thirteen hundred votes in four weeks. In Annapolis the tables are also turned in like manner. Ia Prince George, Hartford, Kent, and in old Frederick &c. &c. Harrison Representatives have been triumphantly elected, where Van Buren candidates succseded four weeks before. Thus have the Republicans of Maryland indignantly rebuked the infamous "niiefpet," and as will be seen by the following, driving them back to their duty . THE SENATE OF MARYLAND. "The annexed article, from the Annapolis liepublican, conveys information which cannot but be exceedingly grateful to the People of the State, llarrassed, ks they have been, now for several weeks, with apprehensions of the suspension or subversion of their Government, they will learn, with a feeling of delightful relief, that a sutlicient number of their agents are about to return to their duty, and that a Senate xsilt It made. We feel a strong confidence that, nut a few days will now elapse, before this most desirable consummation
iviil be brought about. "A DAWNING OF LIGHT. We have good authority for asserting tllit John S.
