As soon as the crowd could be suilicentlv divided to allow a pass.e from the boat, the General, accompanied by a committee of citizens, was escorted to a barouche:; but here, so dense was the multitude, so general was (he desire to press forward and catena glimpse of the features of the hero, that, after

making an attempt to drive the vehicle, it was found impossible lo manage the liooes; indeed, they kicked and reared in so frightful a manner that it was deemed expedient to unharness them. This was done, and the barouche was slowly dragged along the

streets to the Marshall House, not, luwever,

From the Baltimore Chronicle rf Sel. 2-'?. GENERAL HAURISON AT BALTIMORE. Reception if General ILrrison. Never was a conquering general, returning from Ihe field of triumph and glory, received w ith greater enthusiasm, than was manifested ves terday on the arrival of Gen. William Henry Uarkison within the limits of our civ. The early part of the day was unfavorable, and many persons were prevented from joining in the procession by apprehension of rain. Asit was, however, the cortege was one of the most splendid e ver w itnessed in Baltimore. The General, attended by Dr. Alexander. Gen. Medtvrt, and Mr. Booth, slept at Vans' ille cu Wednesday night, and at 2 o" clock yesterday he reached Carroll's Bridge, about a mile from the 1 ilv, on Ihe Washing

ton road, w here he was met by a cavalcade of nearly live hundre d horsemen, lie rode with the above named gentlemen, in a barouche drawn by four gre-y horses. The cavalcade was joined some distance within the city by a vast 11111 her of c itizens on foot, and proceede d, the e quipage of (he Gene ral in the centre, down Pratt street to the Point, from w hence it returned, by way of Market street, to the lodgings prepared for him at the Eutaw House. The procession was under the charge of Jos. K. JStapeetox, Esq. Chief Marshall agisted by a number of deputy marshals, whose exertions and services upon the

occasion w e hope to hole and commend hereafter. Upon arriving in front of the Eutaw House the General left the haroui he, accompanied by the committee of arrangemeets, find was conducted lo a platform over the portico; w here he w as addressed by the Hon. Caarles W. Hanson, on behalf of She citizens of Baltimore. As his address will probably be published, we find it only necessary now to sav. that it was one of the most eloquent and appropriate performances to which il has ever been our lot to listen. It was replete with happy allusions' to the prominent incidents in the life and traits in the c haracter of the: di tinguished individual addressed, clothed in j

language ot Addisonian elegance, and delivered with the energy ;.nd grace w hich are c.haractcrittic of the accomplished orator. Gen. Harrison's reply delighted his friends and disappointed his opponents. It was ready, fluent and eloquent. His manner was full of animation, and he hesitated not, for a moment, for the most appropriate and polish

ed phrase to convey his ilignified and evalted sentiments. His address was interrupted by repeated plaudits from (he immense assem

blage; and when he sat down, the welkin rang with long, loud, and reiterated shouts of admiration and welcome. Upon the whole.

the rcce pdion went e ll" with the utmost eclat, leaving upon the minds of all who participated in it, the most pleasing sensations. Since the time when the elite of the city turned out to we lcome Lafayette to oui borders, no such assemblage has been witnessed amongst us; and we do not doubt in

Ihe least, that, combined with (he impulse given to public sentiment, by (he recent acts of daring usurpation attempted by (he Van Bui en Electors of Senate, it will lead to a salutary and vigilant attention to public affairs, on ihe part of all classes of the community, that must lead the Whig forces to triumphant victory. Gen. Harrison. The Philadelphia U. S. Gazette of the 27lh inst. says: Vesterdey morning Gen. Harrison was at the Hall of Independence, and at the south door of ihe State House, he received the salutations of thousands of his admiring fellow citizens. Heoccupyed the very place on w hich Lafayette stood, w hen so many joined the sc hools of the city to pay their respects to that veteran. "This morning the General will visit Wilmington and return in the evening. Tomorrow he will start for Trenton and New Brunswick, and on Thursday will visit the city of New York. Wherever he goes the highest honors await him. He is emphatically

the people's man.
