Senatorial Poetry. -.Our "grave and learned Signiors" sometimes woo the muse. The following beautiful and feeling lines were written by the witty Senator and veteran statesman, the Hon. John Holmes, Fsq. of Maine, so famous in the annals of Congressional eloquence as a patriot and friend of Liberty, during all the last war. Now in his jovial old age, binding around his "frosty pow" the garlands of poetry preserving his mercurial temperament unconquercd and unsoured by

time, and still devoting his life to the public weal,

though rilling only the humble position of a mem

her of the lower legislative house of his. native

state: A. 1 . iar. From the Portland Courier.

The following lines were written by Sir. Holm

We learn from the Xenia Free Press that Mr. Dirney, of Abolition notoriety, in attempting to address the the citizens of Xenia,a few evenings ago upon his favourite subject of Abolitionism, w as pelted with eggs by a mob and that after the assailants had satisfied themselves upon the carcass of Mr. Hirney, they repaired to the office of the Free Press, a strong Anti Masonic and Abolition paper, which they served in the same manner. Though we have no sympathiy for the Abolition gentry, vc nevertheless do not hesitate to express our decided disapprobation of such

illegal and disreputable proceedings. I Cm. Whig,. April 29.
