the watch tower of Libert; how often do we e it the venal tool of party, swayed by pecisiary pronr. or ambitious reward; or accessible by flattery and the corrupting influence of money. Each striving which shall be the most obedient to party, looking unto its leaders for patrons. Sorry are we to acknowledge the unbounded licentiousness of the partizan Press at the present day, appealing to the worst passions of men, regardless of principles, propriety, honor, or justice. It has been sagely remarked, by some, that the long praised, and glorious Freedom of on r Union would be lost in the rancor of party spirit, and instead of a Republican Government, we shall have a Despotism. Far be it from us to tax those, who differ with us in opinion, with such a desire, but

we do feel deeply impressed with the belief that if

the present, unhallowed, blind, and pernicious, course is persisted in, the Goddess of Liberty will

take her everlasting flight. And wo unto him who shall be instrumental in bringing about such a re

sult; if the bitterest cup of damnation has not yet been tasted, his will be the draft.

But there is a sovereign remedy for this licentiousness of the Press. So long as the People countenance such a press, by supporting it, so long will it remain venal. Therefore, it lies entirely with the People. "If the Press in its might be the throne, there is a power behind the throne the people, who

support the Press, and whose opinions it 6peaks." It then depends entirely upon public opinion, and

public morals. When they are corrupt, the Press

will be corrupt.

As for ourselves we owe allegiance to no party, man or sett of men, and our supporters beinc men

of all parties, we are determined to publish the truth undifgui;-cd. In Baying this, we do not pro

fess neutrality in politics. But we have an opinion of our ovvn, and whenever we sec fit we shall give our opinion freely and unreservedly it being

Oi.u Virgimv in the nEi.D. The Richmond Whig, a leading paper in this old Democratic Commonwealth, has broken ground in favor of the Democratic Republican candidate of the People, Gex. Harrison. We have been looking to see Eastern Virginia, the birth place of the illustrious Harrison, going with Western Virginia, in favor of this old fashioned Democratic Republican. PARTY SPIRIT

la the absence of other topics of interest, it may

be inappropriate, to make some remarks relative to "party spirit " its operation upon the intlur.cc of the Press, and its blighting curse upon the elective franchise.
