MISCELLANEOUS.
THE WIFE. I could Lave stemmed misfortune's tide, And borne the rich one's sneer, Have braved the haughty glance o'prids Nor shed a single tear. I could have smiled on every blow From Life's full quiver thrown, While I might gaze on thee, and know I should not be a Ion?. I could think I could have brooked, E'en for a time, that thou Upon my fading face hadst looked With less of love than now; For then I should at least have felt The 6veet hope still may own, To win thee back, and, whilst I dwelt On earth, not been "alone." But thus to see, from day to day. The brightening eye and cheek, And watch thy life sands waste away, Jnnumbered, slowly, meek; To meet thy smiles of tenderness, And catch'the feeble tone Of kindness, ever breathed the bless; I feel I'll be "alone." To mark thy strength each hour decay, Arid yet thy hopes grow stronger. As, filled with heaven-ward trust, to day '.Earth cannot hold me longer:" Nay, dearest, 'tis too much this heart Must break, when thou art gone; It must not be; we may not part; I could not live "alone."
COJXFICTIO.V OF THE PIRA TES.
. The Boston papers of Thursday are largely occupied with particulars in relation to the
Pirates, against seven of whom a verdict of
guilty has been rendered. The trial appears to have excited an unusual degree of interest
in the. Boston community, and hence the jour
nalists liave paid unusual attention to it, most of them having given the details in full. It
occupied the attention of the court, jury and counsel for seventeen da s, including two Sab
baths; during the whole period the court room was crowded to excess, and for the last three
days many of (he seals were filled with ladies
The prisoners convicted are Pedro Gilbert,
captain ot the l incia, liernado de Soto, first
mate, v arcisco Kuez, carpenter, Manuel Bosr
ga, Manuel Costello, Angel Garcis, and Juna
Montenego, seamen of the Pinda. The five
acquitted are Nicola Costa, cabin boy, Antonio Eerrier, black cook, supposed to be a slave
Domingo Gutzman, an Indian, and a native of
Summatra, Jose V elasquez, and Jose Basilio
tie t-a?vro, beamen of the Pinda. Each of
the seven convicts, (excepting the captain &
mate,; were proved to nave boarded the Mex
lean at the time of the robbery. Costa bein hut 15 years old at the time, and Ferrier, the
cook, being presumed to be a slave-were con

looking from bis own cabin window, and then
sailing away, with the manifest intention of
burning up the vessel and crew while locked
down below! This is the plain statement of
facts, as abundantly proved on the trial. In this awful condition, Providence interposed for their protection I By mere chance a small
scuttle is left by the pirates unsecured ! One
of the men gets out and releases all his com
panions from the most horrible of all deaths
immediate conflagration on the lonely ocean
far from friends and home. Probably in less than five minutes more, the vessel would have been enveloped in flames! They came on deck and extinguished the spreading fire!
hvenatthut tremendous crisis these abused
men were afraid to show themselves on deck, least the demoniac pirate should return and consummate the deed by murdering Ihcmall in cold blood ! But their enemies, thinking the Mexican past redemption, had departed, probably in pursuit of another victim, (hen by chance in sight. They now attempted to repair their damages. But what a spectacle! Every thing in confusion their rigging devastated and destroyed, and they in the midst
against the other
of the ocean, without compass! Repairing
their damages as well as they could, these worthy men abandoned their intended voyage and with empty purses and heavy hearts, shaped their course toward salem. But we have neither lime nor room to do justice to this subject. The Mexican reaches home, and the pirates bear off Iheir plnnder, relying for impunity on the probable destruction of their victim and all on board. Providence ordered otherwise. The tidings of the piracy was borne on the winds to the uttermost parts of the earth, and with a description of the piratical vessel. Months passed away, and news reached Africa, and a British vessel cruising on that distant coast. The Pinda was there, and immediately suspected! The result is known. She was captured bv the
British vessel, the captain, mate and many of
the crew taken prisoners and alter the Japse of nearly two years, they were brought to Salem, to be confronted by the very men whom they had robbed so long before, and considered dead and buried in the deep! Wiat an astonishing train of events! The extravagant tales of fiction are realized! The offenders
are brought to trial, and condemned to death.

had robbed and consigned to death, and ap

the following symptoms: Loss of appetite, nausea, heart-burn, flatulency, acid eructations, or belching gnawing sensotions in the stomach when empty, a sense of constriction and uneasiness in the throat,
pain in the side stomach head and sometimes
in the shoulders, costiveness, sometimes alternate
ly with diarrhoea, chillness, or cold hands and feet, paleness, or sallowness of the countenance, soft
debility, languor, aversion
ejected spirits,- palpitation,
disturbed sleep, dizziness, &c. Nor is the patient's
mind in every case exempt from disturbance. 1 he temper frequently bocomes irratable, the imagination easily disturbed with fearful forbodings. Such are the . effects upon .the system of a dis
eased state of the dijresti ve orsrans, that some or
all and perhaps many other symptoms will be ex
perienced by the patient, which are frequently ta
ken for cistinct diseases.
Among the many remedies proposed for these compliints none has proved so efficatious (if the
testimony of thousands is to be believed) as DU. BLOODGOOD'S ELIXIR OF HEALTH. In pissing through towns lately where it has been sold, 1 have found in every place gentlemen and ladies who have been in a low state of health from some chronic disease of the above description some for a long time, and reduced very low, des
pairing cf ever again enjoying health, who have been fully restored by this medicine alone. It has to my knowledge cured several of the dropsy. It is eminently qualified to restore health after attacks of fevers of every kind. For weakly and delicate children it is an invaluable medicine. It will entirely prevent children from being troubled with worms. It removes all billious complaints , and all obstructions of every kind, promoting a healthy action in all the secretions and excretions on a due performance of which health materially depends.
Its action is upon the stomach, liver and bowels,
the prime regulators of the whoie system; a diseased state of which causes most diseases. It is entirely IJotonicil in its composition and is highly
approved by many scientific and eminent Physicians who have become acquainted with its great
restorative powers so much 6o that some have ad
ministered more than a hundred bottles to -their
patients in a year. There is no deception in the
medicine, references can be given to respectable
citizens in this town who have experienced its benefits. It may be taken by all aires and both sexes
with perfect safety.
