The Washington eorrespondent of the United Stites Gazette, under date of Washington, 4th November says, "It is understood that the President is prodigiously excited by the letter of Mr. Poindexter, and Vows vengeance against the Senator, with stich an enthusiastic good will, that his confidential advisers can scarcely restrain their fcn.ru, least a personal altercation should be the result.'

Montreal in the Dark. Montreal was singularly obscured a few days since. Towards two o'clock the sky assumed an orange color, and after a short time changed to a dark green; gradually increasing in density until three o'clock, when the darkness was so complete, that the houses and shops were lit up as at night. At about five o'clock, a breeze from the northwest sprung up. accompanied by a slight rain, which dissipated the darkness.

i The water which fell was a,s dark as inkt and

tasted and smelt like smoke; depositing when allowed to settle, a black ashy powder. This singular appearance in the heavens is believed to have been caused by large fires in the woods. " ' . .

The great majority have come from the upper counties of North Carolina, a small number from our own state.
