now mgr lhat B des.rcd to have his poor old father with him, from a filse (thV lauda jle) sympathy refrain from bidding, till at list he is cried off to his son, and becomes his SLAVE. The main object we have in view in writing the present article, is to point the public to another, and we conceive a better plan of supporting the poor, than the present onc.
It will be reinemborsd by many of our readers that the Legislature of Indiana, at its lastsuessi-ui tnide an enactment on the subject; and to the following effect, that the commissioners of tha Counties of
Franklin, Layette and Union, or any two of said CouUies, be required to meet at Fairfield, in Franklin Co. on the first Slonday in June (1824,) or some other day appointed by said Commissioners, and when convened, that they shall take into consideration the expediency of establishing an asylum, for the accommodation of the poor in the said counties, and that should they, the said boards of county (Commissioners when convened, agree as to the utility of the scheme, they shall at some convenient time thereafter by themselves or an agent proceed ta purchase a tract of laud in the name of the counties, and to erect buildings thereon tuited to the accommodation of the poor. And that, if necessary the commissioners may assess a tax for the above purpose. And directing the removal of all paupers in the said counties to the asylum, sd soon as the buildings are completed, and take measures for the employment and support of such paupers.
G tving the boards authority to support a director for each county to attend to the management of the establishment. The average amour t paid by Franklin county
alone for the support of paupers is at least tereu or e:ghi hundred dollars peranutiin. Suppose therefore, that the other two counties have the same amount to expend, it willni ike it amount to at least
two thousand one hundred dollars per annum; let
therefore the three counties join and we Lave no
doubt that for two thousand dollars a good farm could be purchased, and some good buildings made thereon, for the protection of paupers, and we believe that, after the institution once gets into operation, one thousand dollars wi!l be equivalent to the expenses, beyond vi hat could be made on the farm; for we do know that mmy "f the persons who are sold as paupers arc able to do something, and
on a good farm well stocked with the assistance of one or two superintendents, enough could be made to feed and nearly enough to clothe the inhabitant?,
the bilance of the money would go to pay the directors. It is probable that we may resams this subject on a future occasion; and if to; we will try to liy before our readers a sccieney of proof to cause them to look to their interests, and the county commissioners to attend to the duties assigned them.

PAUPERISM. There is a subject upon which wo have often pon
dered, and one which wc think demands much more attention from the community than it receives. We allude to the situation of the rooa in our State, wkofrom disease, accidents, and otherwise, are uable to obtain, of themselves, a subsistence. The present system of managing this part of our polituil government, is one (although it may have been Joined by honest men, and under the purest of stives.) in which we find much to deprecate, as tiding to increase, rather thaa to diminish the ex-
?sm?s of government, as well as the number of
apen. ow, ai all n5eo fckould offer some reason for any -SrUin position which t'.ey may take, in order to

rinlege, to make a few remarks: 1st, Tbe pres
et system, is more expensive than necessary. Sc-
'oolly, It is not good because it encourages idle-
Thirdly, It increases the number of paupers.
f it be asked upon, what ground we found these
rtioris, ia reply we would offer the following
"wons. In the first dace that the present system
f managing the government of the poor is more ex-
?"ive tkan it should be, ia to us a self-evident po-i-im, from the fact that generally persons are sold
to ba supported, for which a high price is paid, wlca in fact, tha poor souls are compelled to labor, do actually labor sufficient to pay for their snp?rt. That it encourages idleness, is obvious from
;U provisions and operations; by inducing persons,
clm?d to be indolent to refrain from working
hile in health, to sain means of support for them-
ves in sickness or in adversity, from the fact that
t!ey know that they will be supported at the pub
'c chirge, in such an event. And that it incrcas
; the nuanber of Paupers is obvious, from the same
uon, and the fact that it induces the relatives fttoss who are unable to gain a livelihood, to Ptcu.'a.'e upon the public funds. For inst.nce, A 1 ad iufirm, is so much that he is not capable f making a living, whilt B his ton, although well

Dunn, of I jiwrcnccburgh, would be the man wc would elect to sit in the twenty-fourth Congress. lie has sat for a number of years in our State Assembly, and stands nt the head. lie occupies a large share of esteem in the eye of the people of Dearborn county. lie is a man of enlarged experience, enlightened widom, uncorruptible patriotism, and approved probity. As a man, he is irreproachable; ns a politician, temperate, consistent, liberal and sagacious;
