for tht l.idiaha American. Mr. Printer:

I wish you to announce me as a candidate for this

County at the ensuing election. I am not tena

cious as to the ofrice any one the People, bless

them, may think proper I am at their service. To

speak of myself is always painful; but in this case I will say something. I drink too much, this I acknowledge, but my word, if elected the l ist drop of whiskey goes down my neck on the first Monday in August; after that no man shall ever see me at a grog-shop. This I am ready to verify; my whole object in being elected is to break me of the habit of drinking. Who ever knew it fail of effect.. I

cannot say am a "horse," but I have a little of

tl.e alligator in my composition: it may not beamhs

to state that I am whole-hog for the Canal, and if

electd to the Legislature, I pledge myself it shall

be completed by the first frosty night; and then I

will go to Indianapolis, and get it legalized.

it is supposed, the cook, a negro woman, infused a large portion of arsenic. Fifty persons were immediately seized with all the svmptoinsof poison, and, in a very short period, fourteen of them were corpses. The others recovered, some delay occurred in the administering of the proper antidote from the behef that the disease was cholera. Several of those who died were dissected, and the arsenic found in their stomaches. The cook, who is suspected of tlie act, lias been appre
