After arranging all tilings to his entire satisfaction, the wedding day was fixed, and all hands, as the sailor s;m s bid fair to be happy. But alas! for us poor mortals at the very moment we imagine wc have gained the phantom happiness, and hold it firmly in our grasp, our evil genius whispers yir ..):;.;" and it is gone on the pinions of the wind, never perhaps to return. About three weeks before his intended marriage Jonathan and his girl paid a visit to the house, cf one of her friends. Amoug many other females, here assembled, was one whose features were moulded in a most homely form, and to make her ugliness more apparent, she w as entirely devoid of mental attainments or in other words she was what people call a natural fool. Ilersilly j ' hering. however, served to amuse thecomj...ny for a brief hour or two, when rising to leave the roomne kind o'hinted pretty plainly to the l;md-!ady. that in a week she would come into posse? -ion of her estate. Thus argued or rather ca!adahl Jonathan in his own mind, enquiring, the moment they had left the house, of his betrothed, how much money she thought the red haired fool would bo worth. His deary, little dreaming the drift of her in tended s inquu ies.and in order to make her ac quamtance seem as great as possible, said she believed So.OOO, though she well knew that it was nothing to compare with so large a sum. but she received the reward of her dunliritv in the loss of a husband, for Jonathan paid a isit to me red haired tool the very nextmor ning. and determined not to let so much money escape his grasp, he formally, and in as few words as possible declared "love to her, and had the heart felt satisfaction, after the long courtsmp ot an hour, to win her hand whenever he chose to expect of it. Imprinting a fond kiss on her pale shrivelled lipsshe was no chicken in years Jonathan swore eternal love to her, and painted in the most glowing colours the happiness she would enjoy with him in the married state and even went so far as to say, that if the first heir that was born to him, should prove to be a eirl. it enouia unmeuiaieiy he christened Dollabellal Innocenta, after her beautiful mamma, though! fce had inwardly resolved, heir or no heir, to'

into his keeping, w here he could see in his "mind's eye"' a snug village rising, bearing the beloved name cf Longhead, w hilst he, as justice, of the peace, proprietor of lands Arc Vc would command the respect of the neighbourhood and in time lead to the altar the daughter of some wealthy merchant or farmer, w hilst the read headed founder of his fortunes, and his boarding house miss might go to the old harry tor what he cared. Having gained the heiress, the only thing that puzzled our yankee, was how to break oiThis engagement with the first object of his choice, who was really a sensible and pretty girl.with whom our hero could, he lelt, have lived happy had she possessed that magnet of attraction to all down-casters, plenty of cash, but lacking this virtue, all her other charms were as nought in the scales which self interest held up to the eyes of brother Jonathan. In order to avoid being prosecuted forabreach of promise,1' his fertile brain hit upon a plan whereby his betrothed should be the first to pick a quarrel and thereupon give him an excuse for breaking off from his engagement. In compliance with this plan, he procured a letter writer to indite an epistle to the mother of his first love, informing her that he was a villian, and had left a wife and family in Vermont. The letter was speedily sent to the unsuspecting landlady, and the consequence was an explanation w as rerjuircd from our hero, who feigning surprise that any person in Vermont should know of his intended marriage, and without owning to. or denying the charge preferred against him, told" the landlady and her astonished daughter, that as things had taken such a turn, he reckoned it would be as well for him to leave her house and for both parties to consider what had passed as a mere dream, all engagements to the contrary notwithstanding. To this proposal the good lady at once consented, and in writing too, feeling rejoiced that her daughter had so luckily, as she thought, escaped from the snares of a wretch, who had deserted the wife of his bosom; but what was her surprise on opening her newspaper, three days after, to see inserted, the marriage of ''Jonathan Longhead Lsrj. to the amiable and accomplished Miss Dollabella Innocenta Shewmoulh.' She at once saw that she and her daughter had been played a yankee trick, and thence forth vowed eternal enmity to every son of the land of wooden clocks and nutmegs. On the morning after his wedding. Jonathan went to his wife's attorney, to demand in due form the amount of her portion, but to his utter astonishment found that the whole fortune consisted of -SI500 in Bank stock, which by the advice of her legal friend, his wife had conveyed by deed of trust out of the reach of her spouse, the interest alone being at his disposal. Awakened from his calculating dream of wealth, and blessed with an ugly, old, and foolish vixen for a wife, he determined in a moment of mortified pride to run on at once ana made no secret of his intention, but just as he was about to "pack up his tatters," and follow his nose, he was arrested and forced to give security for the maintainance of his w ife, lie now is obliged to live with her, enjoying, asit were.a little hell on earth, a living monument cf deception, and a vankee caught.
