STANZAS ON AUTUMN. Sweet Sabbath of the year! While evening lights decay, Thy parting step9 methinks I hear Steal from the world away! Amid thy silent bowers 'Tis sad but sweet to dwell; Where falling leaves amTdrooping flowers Around me breathe farewell. Along the 6un-set skies, Theirglories melt in shade; And like the things they fondly prize, Seem loveliest as they fade. A deep and crimson streak, The dying leaves disclose, As on Consumption's waning cheek, Mid ruin blooms the rose! The scene each vision brings, Of beauty in decay; Of fair and early faded things, Too exquisite to stay. Of joys that come no more, Of flowers whose bloom iafled; Of farewells wept along the shore Of friends estranged or dead. Of all that now may seem To memory's tearful eye, The vanished beauty of a dream, O'er which we gaze and sigh. Sweet Sabbath of the year! While evening lights decay; Thy parting step methinks I hear, Steal from the world away!
Tobacco. We must give it up. The doctors medical and divine are lifting up their voices
against it. They are lecturing against it, writing
against it resolving against it, preaching agams
it. Divers honest men, in the spirit of Peter, the hermit, are sounding an alarm, and raising the
standard. The crusaders are gathering socie
ties are forming anathemas are uttering. Come Ladie3 and Gentleman, construct an altar with
your snuflfand tobacco boxes. Lay upon it you
yellow Scotch, your Rappee, and your Maccoboy
vour Cavendish, your Ladies' Twist, and vour
Pigtail. Apply a red-hot lecture or resolution
and laugh, as Nero die, while the flames are as
cending.
The Doctors have convinced us that snuffing
atlects the nose and chewing the teeth and
both the purse. We join the general huc-and
cry, and exclaim, "Burn the Tobacco!!" We
are for for a war of extermination, and have late
ly commenced it in earnest by burning a goodly number of Havannas to say nothing of Sixes
and Long-nines. We would not however be vi
elent in our wrath. Like the worthy old officer,
v ho duly appreciates his pay and rahons,we are
for a long and a moderate zrtr! Exckr Yetcs Letter.

A hint to Bride. A few days since a couple went to Thames church to be married. The ceremony went on as usual very well until it came to the word "with this ring I thee wed,"
wnen the bride essaying to take the gloves oil her maiden maiden hand for the last time could
not effect it. Whether it was agitation cr heat, nervousness or perspiration, the leather clun to
her her hand like man and wife ought to do, and
would not part company. Ihe bridegroom
(bold man) laughed right out; so did the father,
so did mother, so did the bride s maids, so did all
the spectators except the clergyman, and he
(the Kev. JUr. L.ce.) exclaimed, "I do not come here to be laughed at," and shutting his book.
left the ceremony half finished, the bride half
married, and the glove half off. H e add, for the satisfaction of the sympathisers that the bride
went to church uext day with her hand uncuvercd, and the nuptial knot was then tied "as tight i rj...f.- rr...j

Si rping Preacher. A little girl of eleven or

account of her propensity to sermonize in her sleep. Dr. Griffith has taken an opportunity to be present at one of her lectures, and publishes
the particulars in detail, lier language of ex

After closing her sermon, she repeated a hymn,
and reclined, apparently utterly exhausted, and remained quiet till, as she appeared to suppose . 1 , . fl jl .

Soon after she closed, she awoke with a kind
of convulsion; and was very much astonished to

know the cause; and when she was told there
had been a meeting, she was very much grieved
and mortified that she should have been asleep all the time. She had been kept ignorant that

KtmccLOC!. The Legislature of Missouri passed a law last winter withdrawing the deposites from the United States Bank at St. Louis. t The treasurer has now issued a circular without any law authorising him so to do, to the collectors of the state revenues, stating that he will not receive more than two thirds of the revenue in bills of the Bank of the United Slates and its branches. Both are measures of Governor Dunklin, the dignitary who, when president of the Slate Senate, ordered the doors to be thrown wide open when the members of that body were frot bitten with the extreme coldness of the weather, because a clause of the state constitution requires that the Senate shall sit with open doors.
A petition is circulating in Boston with the signatures of 12,000 persons, praying the abolition of Slavery in the District of Columbia.
