CHARACTERISTIC.

From the Lowell Journal. ILLUSTRATIONS OF SHAKSPEATIF. A gentleman observed a few evenings sinr vcrv much to our surprise, tl.at Sl fiksj t are ; not a correct delineator of the human ch;ir:tc:es We took up the cudgel in defence of the Bu:d of Avon, w ho had so frequently furnMicd us with an antidote to care, an.J vehemently insisted that almost every variety of character was faithfully portrayed by Shakspoare's graphic pen. We even went so far as to .offer to prove it, although our time is rather valuable at present, and to furnish a sketch of character from his dramatic works, for the name .if every well known individual, which might be proposed. Accordingly the names of mom than fifty distinguished individuals were written on s'ips of paper, and deposited in a hat. The same" number of extracts from Shakspearc were also written down on separate pieces of paper, and deposited in another hat uid the Littery rcas dra-xn by disinterested persons. It will be perceived th."t

blanks and the prizes, were pretty equally distributed and the re was as much fairness in the drawing as is probably usual on such occasions. How far our conduct may be deemed censurable, for aiding and abetting in stu b a Lottery

affair after the late Legislative act,it remains for

others to decide. It will be recollected that we do not hold oursclf responsible for the application of certain passages to certain individuals. If there should be in many instances, a mlsapj licaticn, it must

be attributed to chance. Indeed, the wonder if,

that so many sketches of character, taken at random, should apply so hnppi'y to the master spirits of the age. The following is the result of this singular Lottery: Andrea Jackson.
