Then* was more whiskey drank in ; Hope last Friday, the day of the j democratic primary, than on any day for a long time. [ The concert given last Thurs a..’ [evening for the benefit of the Moravian Sunday-schol was well attended. The evening was pleasant and the entertainment was thoroughly enjoyed. Almost every number was highly praised by all who heard the concert. The Moravians have an abundance of musical talent and every concert they give is excellent. The proceeds were about$!7. Much credit is due to Mrs. Sarah Woolcy for the success of the entertainment.

Jesse Abbott and Van Reehm had a little altercation last Friday in which Abbott was worsed and a chair deprived of its rounds by violent contact with ids head. The legislature of the state of Washington has passed a cigarette law, making it a erimnal offense to manufacture, buy,sell, or give away, or have in one’s possession,cigarettes or cigarette paper. A large number of our citizens were in Columbus last Saturday. Part were attending the meeting of the republican county central committee; part went to help the successful democratic- candidates shake hands.; part attended teacher’s examination and Olliers combined business and pleasure. On Tuesday, n number of Mys. Solomon Smith’s friends surprised j her ami spent the day pleasantly j with her. Fifteen ate dinner. Herman Tonnehle, of Shelbyville. whose leg was amputated last Thursday for elephantiasis, died Saturday morning from the secondary effects of the operation. There is talk of organizing a musical society in Hope, to be non-sec-tarian, to meet twice a month and to be tor the benefit of Hit' members only. Such an organization would he an excellent move for sustaining the high standard which Hope has already attained in the musical line. Three candidates, £1. Moony Lewis Blades and John B. Kent, announce themselves this week for township trustee. All are prosperous farmers of this township and loyal republicans. If any one of these receives the nomination, he will have the hearty support of the entire republican party.
After the anniversary exercises! last Thursday the G. A. R. Post passed the following resolutions. Resolved, That this Post tender thanks to the members of Urn band for the inspiring music furnished. 1 and to the public schools for the ; assistance rendered in hallowing the i moirory and birth of Washington, | and to Rev. W. H. Vogler for liis eloquent and patriotic address on thatoccasion. Resolved, That the old veterans look to the public schools with pride aud jealous care, as being the future guardians of our country and that thev will on all occasions endeavor to instill into them an uudyin„ iovc for the old Hag.
