PEOPLE, Cornelius Vanderbilt has <jiven SI 00,000 for an addition to the rail way men’s club house that he established in New York some years ago. Perhaps the best work ever done by John Tenniel, the caricaturist whom the Queen lias knighted, was his fantastic illustration .if “Alice in Wonderland." Mr. Tenniel is now 73 years old. He has been with Punch for forty years and has done more than any other man except the lamented Leech to make it famous. While P. Hopkinson Smith was in Louisville recently he passed a wholesale grocery store with some friends and became very much interested in a young shipping clerk who stood on the sidewalk,marking-brush in hand. “That is the way I began life,” said the artist-author, “and with a mark-ing-brush on a keg of fish I did ray first work in colors.” Renan died so poor that his widow will sell his library in order to tide over the period of waiting for a government pension, which parliament is pretty sure to grant her. A Paris correspondent estimates Renan’s income as nevtr amounting to more than about $3,000 a year. The nearest living relative of George Washington is Ebenozer Burgess Ball, who keeps a little cigar stand in the rotunda of the Pension Office. The Sons of th£ American Revolution have investigated his claims thoroughly and their verdict goes to support them. He is said to resemble Washington’s portraits much more closely than any other person claiming relationship, and pictures that have been taken of him dressed in the Continental uniform have been taken by many for representations of Washington himself. Mr. Ball is 70 years old, but is hale and hearty. His Curiosity Aroused. Brook 1 yn Eife. Mr. Newlywed—What is this, my dear? Rejuvenated Bolting New York Sun. By means of ingeniously arranged apparatus the strength of old belting is now renewed or augmented to such a degree as greatly to lengthen its service. To accomplish this, two large, hollow copper cylinders are provided, and into these steam is admitted, so that they are always heated. In a tank is a solution composed of beeswax, borax, glue, starch, and molasses, prepared in equal quantities, this solution being in liquid form; and there are. guide rollers, through which runs the leather belting which is in process of treatment. The belt to be operated upon is started into the machine at a point where it can enter the tank, and while passing through the latter the leather receives an application of the solution; the press rollers immediately squeeze the compound into the fibre of the leather, and then the heat from the cylinders, over which the belting is being drawn, dries the compound. All the rollers and cylinders rest in the bearings. As represented, the application of this compound to the belt, and immediately drying is to add strength to the fibre of the leather in a remarkable degree. If it did not exist in your blood it could not manifest itself in your nose. The Complexion of n Chinese. Is not yellower than that of an unfortunate Individual whose liv« r complaint has assumed tte« hronic form. The eyeballs of the sufferer assume a saffron hue, there is dull pain in the region of tne organ affected, the tongue is coated, breath sour, sick headach* s usually but not always occur, and there is sometimes on arising from a sitting posture. Const pition and dyspepsia are also nttendams of this verv comm -n ailment, always in its aggravated form, liable to breed abscesses of the liver which are very dangerous. Medical writers claim that the successfal remedy for nasal catarrh must bo nonirritating, easy of application, and one that will reach the remote sores and ulcerated surfaces. The history of the efforts to treat catarrh is proof positive that only one remedy has completely met these conditions, and that is Ely’s Cream Balm. This safe and pleasant remoly has mastered catarrh as nothing else has ever dope, and both physicians and patients freely concede this fact. It may sound a little strange, but it is said that mutes have, as a rule, deft fingers. See ‘‘Colchester” Spading Boot ad, in an other column.
