A LAWLESS MOB, Lynching of John Turley at Bedford. Ono Hundred Boosters Who Preferred to Take Ko Chances on the Law's I>clay. John Turley, at Mitchell, Saturday, shot Louis Price, an Ohio & Mississippi railway conductor, because he refused to honor a pass that was in the wrong hands, taking it up In obedience to tho instructions of the railway company, and demanded full fare. This caused an Interchange of hot words. The fare, however, was paid by a fellow-passenger. Turley In his anger followed the conductor to his compartment and without a warning word fired the contents of a 38-calibre revolver in his abdomen twice In quick succession, from which he died at 7:40 Saturday evening. Turley had a bad reputation in the county. After his arrest he was lodged in jail at Bedford. Fears of lynching wore entertained, and a guard consisting principally of Turley’s relatives kept guard Saturday night and Sunday night, but as everything seemed quiet their vigilance was relaxed. Monday morning at 3 o’clock tfie mob appeared at the jail and knocked at tho door. The sheriff promptly responded to the call and asked what was wanted? Several voices responded that a prisoner was there that they wanted, whereupon the doors were unbolted, and instead of having a prisoner the mob commanded the sheriff to throw up his hands in tho face of four revolvers In tho tiands of a masked band. The mob proceeded to whore tho prisoner was and took him from tho coll without saying a word. Turley was taken to a tree close by in the jail yard and hanged. The prisoner appeared very unconcerned and not in the least alarmed about the appearance of Judge Lynch. The action of the mob is approved by public sentiment. TERRE HAUTE POSTOFFICE ROW. The New Appointee Resorts to Force to Gain Possession. A serious controversy has arisen In the struggle for possession of tho postofflee at Terre Haute. Some time ago charges were preferred against Postmaster Greiner and he was removed. Friday, Allan Henry Donham was commissioned as his successor, and ho immediately demanded possession of the office. Mr. Greiner refused to surrender, but offered to transfer tho office at tho close of the week’s business. This was declined. Mr. Greiner insisted that he must be given opportunity to check up his accounts and make an inventory, and ho telegraphed to the Postmaster General for instructions. Soon after a reply was received from Washington signed H. Clay Evans, First Assistant Postmaster General, reading; “It is customary to transfer office Saturday night after business hours. Please so adviso Mr. Mr. Donham, and conform to custom.” This telegram was shown to Mr. Donham. who first doubted its genuinoss, and afterward repudiated it by claiming that Mr. Evans was no longer first assistant postmastergeneral. Meanwhile Mr. Donham had taken possession of tho postmaster’s room, and Mr. Greiner had established himself in the room of tho assistant i postmaster. All the doors leading to the interior were bolted and the siege continued throughout the day. Tho fight is wholly over the civil-service rules. Both sides wanted to be in control when the rules go into effect, after the examination, as tho incumbents arc not subject to the rules. Tho feeling is quite bitter. At 11 o’clock, Saturday night Greiner turned over all the effects of the office to Donham. Both sets of appointees will remain on duty until a decision is reached by the Department. place of the Earl of Derby, formerly Baron Stanley of Preston who is about to retire from tho office. The Earl of Aberdeen (Sir John Campbell Hamilton Gordon, P. C., LL. D.) is probably the most popular nobleman In Scotland. He was Irish viceroy In Mr. Gladstone’s last administration, and no man was ever more popular in the position. Ex-Prcsidcnt Harrison has been retained as counsel by the Citizens’ Street Railway Company of Indianapolis in the litigation to establish its rights against the new company that has obtained a franchise from the city authorities.
Housekeepers Should Remember. The Government Chemists, after leaving analyzed all the principal brands of baking powder in the market, in their reports placed the “Royal” at the head of the list for strength, purity and wholesomej ness; and thousands of tests all over the country have further demonstrated the fact that its qualities are, in every respect, unrivaled. Avoid all baking powders sold with a gift or prize, or at a lower price than the Royal, as they invariably contain alum, lime or sulphuric acid, and render the food unwholesome
Somewhat Interesting. The fair patient had described her symptoms with much volubility and minuteness, but paused a moment for breath. “Madame,” gasped the doctor, “please let mo see your tongue. Thanks. Oblige me by holding it in that position while I write a prescription.” The threatened disbandment of the Delaware militia results from a feeling among the rural voters, who rule Delaware, that such an organization is an expensive toy. The whole State Legislators and judges, costs much less than $100,000 a year, and to appropriate $5,000 a year to what seems mere show strikes the rural voter as wild extravagance. The Governor, some years ago, gave notice that no more militia companies could be organized with the aid of the State. The pranks of tornadoes will always be a matter for wonder, to scientists as well as to the people at large. Take last week’s storms for instance. Up in Iowa it came upon two hay-stacks side by side. One of them was turned completely around to the right, and the other to the left. After doing this it gathered up half the hay in each and scattered It over half the township. When found, the hundreds of little bits of hay were each discovered to be twisted neatly up like piee'es of rope. The uuraber of Indians originally in the United States, he says, has often been estimated in the millions, “even as high as twenty-five milions. ” The Bureau of Ethnology, lowever, has looked into the subject, ind discovered that there were really ;mly somewhere between 500,000 and i million, of whom at least 250,000 still survive. The Major hints that we have already reached the point where we may hope to save the remaant, to be absorbed into modern civilization.
Danger! If you have a feeling of oppression and uneasiness a little above the diaphragm, and just below the right ribs, aggravated by lying on the right side, look out! As sure as fate, your liver is disordered. Perhaps not seriously as yet, but—fatal hepatic abcesses are not uncommon. Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is the precise remedy to regulate the liver, and preuent its congestion and inflammation, and to disperse such minor indicia of its derangement as yellowness of the skin and hall of the eye, furred tongue, sourness of the breath, nausea on rising in the morning, dizziness, sick headache and constipation. By relaxing the bowels painles ly,it opens a channel of exit for superfluous bile, checks a tendency to congestion and engorgement of the liver, at the same time giving a gentle impetus to its secretive action, and affords relief to the stomach, which is usually Inactive, out of order and oppressed with wind when the bowls were costive. Use the bitters also in fever and ague, rheumatism and kindred troubles. When the goat tackled the can of dynamite you ought to have seen the butter fly. B. F.
