The plan of the work now nearly complete, to utilize the power of Niagara Falls is as follows: The river is tapped a mile above the groat fall and a- portion of the water drawn off through a canah At intervals along this canal wells or vertical shafts are dug down into the ground. The water from the canal falls through the shafts, one after another upon turbine wheels that whirl and develop the power for the machine works that will be built along the canal. Great plants are already in proceess of construction. After the water has done its work it passes ofi into a tunnel whch discharges it a quarter of a mile below the falls.— Seymour Republican. 1 ■K- * This world of ours, which seems to be so full of misfortune and misery,
is abounding in pictures to charm the eye and made glad the heart, if we will only look for them. The trouble with too many of us is, we are blind to them from thoughtlessness. We have made up our minds that there is not much sunshine for us, and that we might as well sit still in the midst of disappointments and darkness as to go out in search of light and happines which are not for us. But they are for you and for everyone, and not least among life’s duties is that we seek them with gladness and with faith. Poor thankfulness it is that we give for all our blessings if our days are spent in murmurings that all our wishes are gratified. The harvest is unto the reapers; it is rich and bountiful, but the golden grain will waste if not gathered and stored.—Woman’s Work. * * Shelbyville, Columbus and several other Indiana towns have lawyers who think it as necessary and as legitimate, or “professional,” to advertise their business (paid advertising, we mean) as it is for the banker and the grocer to advertise their’s. And they are not content, cither, with the staid $5.00 a year “ professional card,” but use the display and the reading columns liberally. People were awfully shocked when organs were first brought into the churhes, but now all the churches have organs. Everybody nowadays appreciates the advantages of newspaper advertising and almost cveryboby is willing to pay for it, —all, save the lawyers And the doctors. And they will come.—Greensburg Now Era. •» At the first indication of diphtheria in the throat of a child, make the room close, then take a tin cup and pour into it a quantity of tar and turpentine, equal parts. Then hold the cup over a fire so as to fill the room with fumes. The little patient, on inhaling the fumes, will cough up and spit out all the membranous matter, and the diphthera will pass out. The tar and turpentine loosen the matter in the throat, and thus afford the relief that has baffled the skill of physicians. Scientific American.
Correspondence received from men involved in movements now pending in the Dominion and thoroughly acquainted with all details, asserts that the numder of those committed to annexation in the Province of Quebec is already so great, and increasing' so rapidy, as to indicate that within a year the vote of that Province would, by large majority, favor not only separation from the toother country, but annexatin to the United States. As is well known, the annexationists are now issuing a daily newspaper which is the recognized organ of the movement, and which has recently given it a marked impetus. Through it the idea of a continental nation, which has already taken root in the provinces of the Union, is rapidly gaining strength. While large numbers of theso who are dissatisfied with the present condition of affairs go no further than to favor an independent government for Canada, those who advocate annexation look upon the former class as most influential and important allies, and it may be regarded as certain that the annexation party will retain pleasant relations with those who desire only independence. If the correspondence received here from the sources already indicated could be given to the American public, it would not only demonstrate that great political upheavings and changes are imminent in the Dominion, but convince all thoughtful readers that the Canadian situation will become one of the most important questions to arise on the threshold of the incoming administration. —H.
