A man’s natural gallantry—his horse-car gallantry so to speak—sometimes hangs fire when the iden - tity of a person needing its display continues unknown. Tho other day Mrs. Cleveland stood for a five-mile ride in a New York elevated train. Among distinguished women inventors Mrs. Ella Gaillard is noted for the number and variety of her original productions, which include the eyeless needle now used by surgeons, the musical top, a folding flatiron, a musical fountain, a superior kind of dress-shield and sweat-band fo ■ hals, a key which registers wheth or tho door is locked or not, a musical paper-weight and calendar combined. and a carriage telephone. The young women of England are faking up physical culture with an enthusiasm which will carry them far ahead of their American sisters if the latter do not look to their laurels. Recently the pupils of the Young Women’s Christian Institute connected with the Poly technic gave a remarkable gymnastic performance. Fencing, vaulting horses, figure marching and other evolutions were gone through with much energy and skill to the accompaniment of a full brass band. The pupils of tho Regent Street Institute for Young Men looked on and were much impressed. CONTRASTED TOILET. The accompaning picture in which a juvenile toilet is shown, along with that for a woman,, was drawn from the actual garments as worn by live persons. The dress of the young girl is made of silver grey bengaline. The yoke had alternate rows of white
lace insertion and silver grey ribbon. The older girl in the same group wore a dress Of cream cashmere, the edge of the skirt being of cream embroidered tulle. The deep corselet, which was laced behind was cream silk brocaded with gold scales, to form the. appearance of a cuirass. Among the attractions of the World’s Fair we may see a very pretty Scotch girl, whose remarkable resemblance to Robert Burns is proverbial throughout her native country. Her name is Jean Armour Bums Brown, and she is the greatgranddaughter of the eldest son ol the poet. During the unveiling ol Burns’s statue, at Dumfries, she sat on the platfor .o and the multitude seeing at once ‘me striking likeness between the bv nza face and the living one neai i c " . >t into tumultuous applause, i ■ ;nie Jean,” as she is called by U.i admiring natives, has a very sw*. > voice and sings with much feeliuj the songs of Robert Burns. At the World’s Fair there is to be a fac-simile of the Burns cottage on the babks of the Ayr, and Mrs. John A. Logan is urging the Lady Board of Managers to extend an invitation to the Scotch girl to visit the Fair, and to mise a fund to defray the expenses of such a trip. -
The Farmer and the Grocer. A grocer would not pay a farmer the price of a ten- ,,- pound turkey for one that weighed but seven pounds. Why should a farmer pay a grocer the price of the Royal Baking Powder for a baking powder with 27 per cent, less leavening strength ? The Royal Baking Powder is proven by actual tests to be 27 per cent, stronger than any other brand on the market. Belter not buy the others, for they mostly contain alum, lime and sulphuric acid; but if they are forced upon you, sec that you are charged a correspondingly lower price for them

An old squaw counting her wampum was probably the original Indian Summer. Preventing Future Misery. If there la In this vale of tears, a more prolific source of misery than the rheumatic twinge, wc have yet to hear of It. People are born with a tendency to rheumatism, just as they are with one to consumption or to scrofula. Slight causes may develop this. As soon as the agonizing complaint manifests itself, recourse should be hod to Hostetler’s Stomach Hitters, which checks its further Inroads and banishes the rheumatic poison from the system. This statement tallies exactly with the testimony of physicians who have employed this tine blood depurent in their nrivate practice. There Is also the amplest professional and general t< stimony as tc .the efficacy of the Hitters for malaria, liver complaint, constipation, kidney trouble, nervousness and loss of appetite and flei-h. After a wetting, whether followed by a cold or not, the Bitter < Is useful as a preventive of the initial attack of rheumatism. If wind would alone do it, the !Ur-ship would have boon made a success long ago. Bed Rock Reached on Florida Rates by the Pennsylvania Lines.
