The 1,500 weeklies serving subscribers in the People’s par ty are going to have a telegraphic bureau of tfoelr own in Washington. A shoemaker is not necessarily a cobbler in these days of modern invention. The labor-saving wonders of the times have practically swept hum from tho field. The Philadelphia Record is horrified to know that two thousand people become insane in New York every year owing to the noise and confusion incident to life there. every known color and shade is now produced from the ooai tar products, even the cochineal red being so closely imitated that the imitation can only be distinguished by experts. There are several degrees of arson, hut the first must be committed at night, and the building set on fire must be inhabited. This degree of arson was a capital offense in the South before the war. The captain of a bicycle club, in :an English town, while suffering from a fatal illness, requested that his body should be conveyed to the cemetery on bicycles. His wishes were obeyed, and forty-three men on bicycles followed the coffin. Henry Roberts and Jerry Constantine, of Sparta, Ky., entered into a strange agreement. The former borrowed money of the latt er, and stated that if he did not pay him upon a specified day, that Constantine would be at liberty to kill him. The day came, Robert’s hadn’t the money and Constantine shot him dead. Without the acid, which forms the irritating sensation caused by a sting from a bee, that proverbially industrious animal could not do its work neatly or well. This acid is used freely in the manufacture of honey, if such the process could be called, and the process would be very imperfect without it. France exports to Hus country annually more than four limes as much champagne as she consumes herself. Last year 19,685,000 bottles were sent over here, and it could not be said of it, as one of Charles Lever’* characters said of the '■-•hisky which he offered “his rivcrince,” that “there’s divil a headache in a hogshead of it.” For $16.26 iji is possible to obtain engravings in miniature of the most celebrated paintings illustrating the voyages and discoveries of Columbus, always worth their face value as postage stamps, and some day to become even more valuable as rarities. This new series, known as the Columbian series, will differ in form and size from the ordinary stamps, and a complete set, unused, will be very interesting a few years hence. The “Poor Man’s Belt” in the South begins not far south of Richmond, Va., and extends along the A tlantic and gulf coasts into Texas. Its length is not far from 1800 miles, while it is from 50 to 150 miles in width. The soil is poor, but the forests produce not only lumber in abundance, but also large quantities of pitch, tar and turpentine. It got a bad name during slavery days because no cotton was raised in it, but, since the South is beginning to look elsewhere than to the cotton field for its wealth, the “Poor Man’s Belt” promises to become one of the richest parts of the Southern States. One of the best arguments for good roads is contained in a calculation recently published in one of the engineering papers. It states that on the worst earth roads, not muddy but sandy, a horse can draw only twice as much as he can carry on his back; or a fair earth road, three and half times as much; on a good macadamized road, nine times as much; on a smooth plank road, twenty-five times as much; on a stone track way, thirty-three times as much, and on metal rails, fifty-four times as much. The men who use the country roads can therefore make money by imC roving the roads rather than by uying new horses every year or two.
Royal Baking Powder. ' Tti” GOVERNMENT TESTS ESTABLISH ITS ABSOLUTE SUPERIORITY [Datafrom the latest Official U. 5. Government Report on Baking Powders, Department of Agriculture, Bulletin ij. page jiff.) Royal is placed first of the cream of tartar powders, actual strength, 160.6 cubic inches of leavening gas per ounce of powder. • Every other powder.tested exhibited a much lower strength than the Royal, the average being 33 per cent. less. *****- 1 Every other powder likewise showed the presence of alum or sulphuric acid. < The claim that this report shows any other powder of superior strength or purity has been denounced as a falsehood by tl;e Government officers who made the tests. Avoid all baking powders sold with a gift jr prize, or at a lower price than the Royal, as they invariably contain alum, lime or sulphuric acid, and render the food unwholesome. 1

There is only one way to cure deafness, and that Is by constitutional remedies. Deafness Is caused by an Inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When the tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when It is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the Inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, bearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. Wo will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars; free. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. BW7Sc.
