FORTUNE MOW TWO SCHOOL TEACHERS DID IT. X\»o Uundrod Dollars (Iron .t to T\*«Ho Thousand Within a Year. [Marion. Indiana. Chronicle.] There are two sisters teaching ia the Marion public schools who have reason to thank the rapid development of one of Chicago’s manufacturing suburbs for a small fortune which has grown from a very tiny seed planted less than a year ago. To a representative of the Chronicle these young ladies told the story of their remarkable investment as follows: "At the close of our school work a year ago we found that wo had saved about $100• each, tor which wo had no immediate use. We were spending our vacation in Chicago, and stepped into the Chamber of Commerce Building to sec Jay BWiggins A Co., whom wo had long known. They wpio just then founding the new town of .Griffith, whoso fuel oil pipe linos and four great railroads, inducing a complete belt line encircling Chicago, gave great promise of making this a factory center. “We were Inclined to make an investment in the new town and consented to join them in the purchase of a five-acre block which they wished to subdiv'.dt with some other tracts and put immediately on tire market. Our $200 scilicet! to make the caeir payment f ir onethird Interest in this five acres and we expected to meet the clefon cd payments from our wag.e the following year. “After making this investment we went further on our vacation trip, and what was our surprise a tew wtycli* later to receive word that the five sores had been bought, subdivided, and completely sold out. Three parties had taken the entire block at a profit of almost $0,000, one-third'of which we learned was at our disposal. “So far wo had not even seen Griffith, hut this remarkably ijuick turn of a:fairs gave us i. groat Interest in the new town, and wo went immediately to look It over. Wo found, nine miles southeast of Chicago limits, a remarkable railroad junction, hut little more than that. There wore perhaps a dozen houses scattered about in the oak groves and occupied by railroad cm-, ployes. There wore no stores, no streets, no sidewalks, no nothing—except a bright future. The surveyors were just putting down the lot stakes. Wo found our block in the very center of the town plat, with frontage on what promised to he the best business street. The lots i had been soid out at the ridiculously I low average of $130 each. "We remarked that we would ratnor buy than soil at these figure. This quick sale, even at a low price, had given us the capital with which to buy. Wo immediately selected Block XI in tlie Original Town of Griffith, and bought it with the profits wo had just made. We left Griffith, saying: ■Well, -,v« shall see what a year will bring forth in this promising place.' “We have just now returned from Griffith after a year’s absence. Wo found four factories completed am', many more negotiating to come. Houses are going up on every hand, and streets which had not been cut out when we were there a year ago, are now lined with prosperous stores. Gar block, if sold at present prices, would realize about $1.2,000, but we would not take $115,000 for It. If it were similarly located in Marion, It would bring $50,U00. "We have seen Marlon grow up from a country town Into a nourishing young city, by the location of factories, and Marion has but three railroads and has not the great -ity of Chicago to tic to. “Wo oontiei'tly expect within the next live years to sec Griffith a great and flourishing city, and that will be time enough to realize on our beautiful block of lots. Since we bought our relatives have made further purchases and have made money, too. We certainly believe that Griffith lots .bought at present prices and on the very easy terms at which they can be had will prove a quickly paying investment” The man arrested for stealing a ride got off because the policeman couldn’t find it on him.
